Plenty of pedigree in ALWS field

Brooklawn (N.J.) Post 72 comes into this year’s American Legion World Series (ALWS) having won the past two national titles. But the Brookers are by no means the only team in the field with a strong Legion Baseball pedigree.

This year’s Series includes two other former champs, a program that has two runner-up appearances and others making at least their second appearance in Shelby.

Brooklawn – which won titles in 1991, 2001, 2013 and 2014 – brings a 44-5 record into the tournament; combined, the field in Shelby this year is 298-53. Chapin/Newberry (S.C.) Post 193 carries a 28-0 record into its first ALWS appearance.

Millard (Neb.) Fifty-Two's Patriots Post 374 – which is sponsored by former Legion Baseball player and current Minnesota Twins pitcher Brian Duensing – also is making its first appearance in the ALWS.

Former champions in the field are Midland (Mich.) Berryhill Post 165 (2009) and Retif Oil of New Orleans (2012). Midland also finished as runner-up to Brooklawn last season.

Medford (Ore.) Post 15 has two runner-up appearances on its résumé, the most recent coming in 2009 to Midland. Waipahu (Hawaii) Post 35 is making its fourth appearance since 2011, while Cromwell (Conn.) Post 105 is back after advancing to the ALWS last year.
