ALWS champs recognized at South Carolina State House

Chapin-Newberry (S.C.) Post 193 was once again lauded for capturing the 2015 American Legion World Series (ALWS) title in Shelby, N.C., last August – the team's first ALWS title in 79 years.

Chapin-Newberry players and coaches visited the South Carolina State House in Columbia on March 16 and received a standing ovation from members of both the House of Representatives and Senate. The team was invited to the State House for a reading of a concurrent resolution that recognized the young men for their Legion Baseball accomplishments.

“What this team accomplished means so much to our community, our families and our state that it makes a man humble,” said Chapin-Newberry Post 193 manager and Legionnaire Robert Livingston. “I know that the players and their families will cherish what they accomplished for the rest of their lives!”

Livingston said the team was introduced by Rep. Walt McLeod, who shared Post 193’s journey to the Legion World Series and how he attended all but one game at Keeter Stadium – Day 3 of the ALWS when Chapin-Newberry lost to Retif Oil (New Orleans). And Speaker of the House Jay Lucas added how he “was on the edge of his seat” as he watched the semifinal game on ESPN where Chapin-Newberry claimed a one-run victory over Medford (Ore.) Post 15 to earn a spot in the championship game.

The House and Senate members also recognized the players' parents “for their support and sacrifices they made in both raising such fine young men and for all the travel they had endured in supporting the team,” Livingston said.

“Being the manager of the Chapin-Newberry Post 193 and Post 24 baseball team is pure joy! I love being around these young men who for a summer joined together to do the unforgettable.”
