Scholarship opportunity for 2022 Boys State and Girls State attendees
High school juniors who will attend an American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State program this summer may be eligible for a higher education scholarship.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is available for high school juniors who participate in the current session of American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State and are direct descendants (or legally adopted children) of wartime veterans eligible for American Legion membership.
The Samsung scholarship awards up to $10,000 for undergraduate studies (e.g., room and board, tuition and books). Each applicant is selected according to his or her involvement in school and community activities, academic record and financial need.
The 2022 Samsung American Legion Scholarship application will be available Feb. 11. All applications must be submitted using the online application system.
Please note that the scholarship is restricted to high school juniors participating in the current session of Boys or Girls State; youth who participated in either program the previous year cannot apply or reapply for the scholarship.
A Boys and Girls State participant from each state is selected as a finalist for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. During The American Legion’s Fall Meetings in October, the Committee on Youth Education will select the scholarship winners. All scholarship recipients will be notified of their award by a letter in late October.
2021 Samsung American Legion Scholarship recipient Madison Craig of Solon, Iowa, attended Iowa Girls State last summer; she was sponsored by American Legion Stinocher Post 460. “I will forever be grateful for the opportunities offered at Girls State, especially the Samsung American Legion Scholarship,” she wrote to The American Legion. “Through this program, I wrote an essay about my Grandpa, John S. Craig. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a surgical technician in Germany. Spencer Burke, a 2021 Samsung American Legion Scholarship recipient who attended Texas Boys State, wrote to The American Legion, “Thank you again for the incredible opportunity to attend (2021 Texas) Boys State and for awarding me this fantastic Scholarship. I am deeply grateful to The American Legion for its mission to educate and support young people in civic engagement. My 92-year-old grandfather, a 26-year veteran of the Air Force who served both in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, is very proud of his affiliation with The American Legion and all of the great services and programs it provides to the community. With this Samsung scholarship, I honor him and the millions of servicemen and women who have sacrificed so much for our country.”
