Career fairs heading to big-name locations

As is the case each month, Legion-sponsored veterans career fairs and hiring events will span the entire country, reaching small towns and major metropolitan areas. Throughout May, The American Legion will team with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Military.com and RecruitMilitary to bring job fairs to a variety of locations in an effort to connect veterans, servicemembers and their families with potential employers.

Perhaps the most notable date in this month’s slate of job fairs is May 23, when Hiring Our Heroes will hold hiring events at historic Fenway Park in Boston and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - just four days before the racetrack plays host to the prestigious Indianapolis 500 race.

At the Boston event, job-seekers who attend the career fair in the morning or early afternoon will be issued a complimentary ticket to the Red Sox game that evening – the first of four against the Cleveland Indians – upon providing proof of military service.

In Indianapolis, the fair will be held as part of the race-week activities in the venue’s Pagoda Plaza. Veterans, servicemembers and spouses are invited to attend.

On May 31, veteran job fair efforts will extend beyond the United States to Puerto Rico, where Hiring Our Heroes will host its second career event on the island. The Legion had a large presence at the previous career fair there last year and figures to be well-represented again, as Puerto Rico’s veterans unemployment rates are still unproportionally high.

A full listing of career fairs for May can be found at here. Pre-registration for the events isn’t required but recommended, as attendees can electronically pre-submit their résumés to employers in attendance.

At past career events, employers like Amazon.com, Microsoft, the Department of Labor, FBI and many others have been in attendance, accepting résumés and even interviewing on the spot.
