Hiring fair, résumé-writing workshop set for D.C.

The American Legion’s Veterans Employment & Education Division will host two events on Feb. 20 at the Washington Hilton in the nation's capital that figure to help veterans and servicemembers find meaningful careers in the civilian working world.

From 9 to 11:30 a.m., the Legion and Easter Seals will host a Résumé Workshop that will provide one-on-one tutoring on writing an effective résumé and interviewing. A Hiring Our Heroes Career Fair will follow in the same venue from 1 to 4 p.m.

Veterans, servicemembers and their families can pre-register free of charge for both events; preregistration is not necessary and walk-ins will be admitted.

The Résumé Workshop will feature two classroom instruction sessions on writing résumés, interviewing, networking and other tips from job-search experts. Individual counseling sessions with human resource managers and job counselors will follow. Those individuals will sit down with each attendee and provide individualized feedback on résumés and interview techniques.

The Hiring Our Heroes Career Fair will welcome employers from the public and private sectors. Employers will accept résumés from attendees, and interview and even extend job offers on the spot. To register, click here.

Hiring Our Heroes, a joint initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Legion, has a strong track record of producing jobs for veterans. This career fair figures to be as successful, as it will be held in conjunction with the Legion’s annual Washington Conference.

Prior to the hiring fair and workshop, the Legion will conduct an Employment and Empowerment Summit on Feb. 19 that will include workshops and panels on employment, education and finance, as well as sessions on federal résumé writing for veterans looking for federal employment.
