American Legion Post, Scouting, and Amateur Radio

Forums:

The American Legion is doing a lot of great things in the community. I have only been a member for a short time yet I have been very impressed.
I have learned that the AL is very big with Scouting and that is wonderful. I have been involved with Scouting for many years and to this day, I remain a active Scout leader for the West Michigan Venturing Crew 9050. I am also an devote amateur radio operator which is why I originally joined the AL; I saw that the AL organized a amateur radio club, K9TAL.
Which brings me to my point. Scouting and amateur radio are fantastic ventures to be involved with. You can combine the two into one! As I said, I am a leader with the West Michigan Venturing Crew 9050. The crew specialty is amateur radio and emergency services. We are very active with emergency communications and other aspects of EmComm. EmComm is one of the primary purposes of the TALARC.

The crew does contesting, DXing, emergency communications, are trained medical responders, and still do all the traditional scout things such as camping, hiking, canoeing, and more. Our crew combined two great past times into one. This is a great way for a post to add both if they do not have them or they only have one. The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) has flyers titled "Scouting & Amateur Radio" which help with recruitment.

Just some food for thought for any post that wants to add or increase youth and amateur radio involvement.

If anyone is interested in learning more, feel free to contact me.

Howdy Jim! I see you everywhere..LOL. I look forward to the 2013 National Jamboree and being a part of K2BSA.

JOTA is a great event. We do various Merit Badges, demonstrations, fox hunt, games, kit building, and lots of radio chatting. We use all modes, CW, voice, packet and other digital modes, slow scan ATV, and this year we are adding HSMM-MESH.

Would there be any interest in K9TAL operating during JOTA and perhaps offering a special TALARC certificate to Scouts that work us?

Rich,
Do you participate in the Jamboree on The Air (JOTA)?
Our next one will be October 13, 2012.
I am also involved with Scouts as an Assistant District Commissioner in the Upper Peninsula, however we have recently merged with Bay Lakes Council from Wisconsin.

Hi Terry
The West Michigan Venturing Crew 9050 does host JOTA every year. The crew is already well on their way to planning events for this year too.

There are many changes going on right now here in Michigan since the Area 2 Project was approved as you referenced.
