Flag amendment introduced in House

Flag amendment introduced in House

An amendment giving Congress power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States., H.J. Res 47, was reintroduced in the House of Representatives this week by Reps. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., and Dan Lipinski, D-Ill. The resolutions reads simple, “The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.”

The American Legion supports such an amendment through Resolution  272, passed during the 2012 National Convention in Indianapolis. The resolution states, in part, that The American Legion continue to urge the Congress of the United States to propose and approve an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow the Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the Flag of the United States.”

Legion family members are urged to contact their representatives and ask them to sign on as co-sponsors of H.J. Res. 47. If they already are co-sponsors, please thank them for their support of the amendment.

All should all remember we raised our hands and promised to defend the Constitution (the Supreme Law of the Land) not a simple symbol - as important as the national flag is. Increased legislation always leads to less freedom not more protection of freedom. The First Amendment is the first for a reason! The fact is, our country is built on toterance of all ideas and actions, and we volunteered to serve that basic idea. The strength of our Republic is in our philosophy under "We the People" and "All men are created equal. . . " not in colored pieces of cotton, polyester or silk. Why ask Congress to purposefully take more individual rights away from us? If you haven't noticed lately they are not acting universally in the peoples best interests. As Washington stated in his farewell address, factions (parties will be the destruction of America. Until Congress focuses on policy versus politics we should be more interested in restricting them.

I was seriously disappointed when I read my June Legion Magazine to see Lowrey Finley-Jackson disrespecting the flag by wearing it as a SCARF. She should realize that there is nothing patriotic about wearing a scarf (probably made in China) in the form of the flag that so many have died to protect. Please lose it, maam.
