VA regional offices shut down

VA regional offices shut down

The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced it is placing more than 7,000 employees on furlough, effective Oct. 8 – a move that will eliminate public access to all 56 of its Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) regional offices.

As a result of the furloughs, VBA can no longer conduct personal interviews and hearings, process GI Bill benefits, offer educational or vocational counseling, or provide outreach activities and programs – including VetSuccess on Campus. The reduced work force also means that American Legion service officers are unable to use office space allocated to them at the regional offices.

Daniel M. Dellinger, national commander of The American Legion, expressed outrage at the latest impact of the government shutdown on veterans. "Because Congress and the White House refuse to speak to each other, our country’s veterans are suffering more with each passing day of this extremely dangerous impasse," he said. "Now we’ve reached the point where VA can’t even process benefits claims for our men and women who served in uniform. Our nation’s leaders need a reality check. Do they really think they are serving the best interests of our veterans – or the best interests of all Americans – by forcing government agencies to shut down?"

On Oct. 4, Dellinger held a press conference at the World War II Memorial in Washington, a memorial that was initially closed to World War II veterans and is still closed to the public. He told reporters that the House of Representatives, the Senate and President Obama were all to blame for the shutdown.

Besides the 7,000 VBA workers furloughed, VA has also placed more than 2,700 Office of Information Technology workers on furlough. This means that all development of VA software has ceased, including work on the Veterans Benefits Management System, which VA Secretary Eric Shinseki has repeatedly identified as a key component to eliminating the claims backlog.

In a statement, VA said claims processing will continue until funding is exhausted, "which is projected to happen in late October." Mandatory overtime for claims processors, scheduled to continue until Nov. 16, has also been abruptly halted.

VA employees who staff the department’s compensation and pension call centers are still on the job. Veterans who want to file benefits claims or check on a claim’s status can still do so by calling (800) 827-1000.

VBA also announced it will no longer be able to respond to congressional inquiries until appropriations have been restored.

Shinseki is scheduled to testify Oct. 9 at a House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs hearing that will examine the impact of the current government shutdown on VA operations.

I did not serve inthe Army inorder to receive benefits, certainly not any entitlements. Five new VA hospitals are being built. Construction is late and cost overruns are HIGH! This happens with monopolies, as in VA health care. There are many very fine hospitals where the 5 VA's are being built. These non-VA hospitals are open! If the VA would let vets go to those hospitals, government closure would have much less effect. Again, I did not serve to get benefits! I am not owed anything from my country.

The American people never voted for Obamacare As a famous German propagandist once said, if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth. Elections have consequences, it is true. And in 2008, following the epic market crash and financial crisis, Republicans were demolished in the general election, losing the White House while Democrats picked up seats in the House and Senate. And yet, as catastrophic as that was for the GOP, Democrats did not achieve a complete lock on government. They still only had 59 seats in the U.S. Senate, one short of a filibuster-proof supermajority in that body. It was not until the late Sen. Arlen Specter, a lifelong Republican, switched parties in April 2009 to join Democrats, providing the 60th vote in favor of Obamacare in December 2009. But to argue this was somehow a sweeping mandate for overhauling the nation’s health care system is a bit specious. After all, when voters were given their opportunity to render their verdict on Specter in 2010 — and thus Obamacare — they threw Specter out on his ear in favor of now Sen. Pat Toomey. Again, Toomey was an Obamacare opponent. In that respect, if the issue in the 2004 primary had been national health care, it is not outlandish to suggest that Specter might not have prevailed. Even in the state of Massachusetts, when socialized medicine advocate Ted Kennedy passed away, and voters had an opportunity to affirm their support for Obamacare, they elected Scott Brown on the platform that he would vote against it. In 2010, after Brown was sworn in and when Democrats could no longer get to 60, they made several modifications to Obamacare using the simple majority reconciliation process, getting around traditional order in the Senate that typically requires 60 votes. Again, hardly a sweeping mandate for a law that only came into being because Specter duped Pennsylvania voters by changing his party affiliation. If elections had had the consequences voters intended, Obamacare would have been killed at inception by being blocked in the Senate. To argue otherwise is to make the claim that somehow, in 2004, when Specter was reelected as a Republican, Pennsylvania voters secretly knew of his plans to switch parties (and vote for Obamacare) when it became clear he would lose to Toomey in the 2010 GOP primary. Which, of course, is ridiculous. In fact, Pennsylvania voters have a history of rejecting nationalized health care supporters, including Rick Santorum’s victory over appointed incumbent Harris Wofford in 1994. This history flies in the face of the Democrat narrative that elections have consequences. The American people did not vote for Obamacare. Instead, the law was enacted without a single Republican voting for it in the Senate. And now with Obamacare set to fully go into effect in 2014, the American people are to believe that the debate is over. That it’s a done deal, the law of land, and we just need to move on as a nation. That, the only role for the Republican-controlled House of Representatives — which was reelected in 2012 — is to rubber stamp the law’s funding. That there can be no discussion on this point. No negotiation with House leaders. But as House Speaker John Boehner recently stated, “It just doesn’t work that way.” Yes, elections do have consequences, but to get anything done in the U.S. Senate, you need 60, not 51. And, to get any appropriations passed, they must be originated and get through the House of Representatives. So, if Democrats really want the so-called shutdown to end, perhaps they should try sitting down with Boehner and talking about Obamacare. Grandstanding and pretending the law came into being via popular acclaim while effectively shoving it down the nation’s throat is a continuation of a big lie in the hopes that voters won’t remember what really happened.

So your point is that disabled veterans should just accept not getting paid their disability benefits which will put many out on the streets, take food out of their children's mouths and cause massive financial suffering to those who have served this country, just because a politician from Pennsylvania screwed over his state's voters in 2009? I live in TEXAS. I didn't vote for Specter. So the feds maybe shouldn't pay disabled vets in Pennsylvania? That's as stupid as your stupid argument.

Social security, Medicare were all oppose by a majority at the time. What would this country be like now without these safe guards. If it is a bad law then people will reject it why not give it a chance.

John P

October 9, 2013 - 2:25pm

100% correct in every detail. This "law" will not really help people as much as it will destroy an economy. If it was such a great thing why was it done behind closed doors, and passed in the middle of the night? The low information voters need to wake up, and see what this law is all about, and why their president leads from behind, a place that when things start going bad, it is easy to retreat from. The supreme court did not uphold the law as constituional, but as a TAX. The ACA is costing people's jobs, as small business have to cut hours to prevent paying the extreme cost, it not beacuse they don't care, it is because they have to, to remain in business even with part time workers. The improvement in the employment numbers in the past 6 months is a result of part time hires and temporary workers, not real jobs as the White House would have us believe. There are many ways to fix this monstrosity, but till the White House and Senate sit down with the House it will never happen. This president is power hungry, and hides behind others instead of dealing with failure. He claims that what has hsppened not just under his watch but because of it are false scandals. If the real vets here had gone into the jungle with a "leader" like him, the chances are very high he would have not come back from a sucessful mission. He is only the president because of his skin tone, not his qualifications or qualities (whidh he has neither). I can only people wise up come the next election, and avoid anyone like him, Hillary or any other of his cronies. If it weren't for the "accidental" slips by his VP he might have almost gotten by with some of this, and his continious campaining. When will he stop campaining and lead... the obvious answer is never... God Bless American and protect us from this mistake.

October 9, 2013 - 7:38pm

John, I don't mind your writing on your opinion of the president or your ideals. What I do have a problem with is your statement about "real vets". That comes across elitist. Who are you to judge who a "real vet" is or who is a real patriot? You have passion for our country...I get that. But to bash anyone who disagrees with you, in my opinion, is dishonorable. I worked with a variety of people in the military. There was many I disagreed with including officers and other enlisted leaders, however, we were one in our fight against our enemies. Please show more respect to all the troops. Not just the "real vets". We are all real vets!

Mr. M The comment was not addressed to vets, it was some of those that from reading their post, are either dependents or military wantabes. I like many more here would have had anothers back through thick or thin. I am a rift office, that took a two year break after Nam to get my head together, the returned to AD to complete 27 yrs retiring as a E-9 and holding an reserve IRR commission of O-6. I have stopped bullets for my country and done things that my leaders thought to be in it's best interest. If my commet offended those that wore the uniforms regardless of service, regardless of duties, and were there if called on to due their duty and have the backs of there fellows, I am truely sorry. Like many here regardless of which side they may be on in this disgracefull shut down I just wish that more of those in both Congress and the White House had served, so they could understand for a few minutes what the families of those that were killed over the weekend are going through, and not just take the oppertunity to show boat for the press. To selectively punish families, or vets visiting memorials, or children on school trips by shutting down memorials, the White House, and other sites Owned by the people is a farce and a shame. If they were loosing pay, having hardships over this then they might just pull their respective heads out of there A$$es and do the work they are paid to do.

All of you remember Bill C. Well he had us out of dept. Then came along George B. We Went back in dept. Then Obama took over. We were already in dept. So I think the GOP or we say republicans got us ware we are today. They over spent and now they can't find there way out of the mess that there in. Lets stop all of the house and senates pay until they get there act together. Don't let them give there checks to charity. 6yr USMC, 15yr Army. I just hope and pray they get it together by the end of the month. Like all of us we depend on it to help pay our bills.

Bill C had little to do with getting debt under control, it was a Shutdown by the Republicans that forced his hand and made him cut back on his socialist programs. But I really think it is time for the House to give in. Vote a budget that includes what the president (little P) promised (a lie as usual) it would cost and not a dime more of the 4 to 5 times it does cost.. and we can all get back to whinning about something else...

Mr.M

John, How does a Poly Sci Major with a MS, make you more qualified than others to have the right opinion? You sound like an elitist. The same as you call the now sitting president. If you're so great, why aren't you the President? Of course you are too good for that.

John P

October 10, 2013 - 1:42pm

The thing about my Poly Sci was ment to L Williams, who asked if my openion was based on Fox or other network, and implied a question if I could read. The answer is yes I can read, and unfortunately I get a little fired up with the situation that is going on. The fact that we will not get disabality checks is important to those that really need them, it fortunatly for me is a minor inconvience. I waited 3 years for them to start so a delay from time to time is no big deal. BUT for some people it means eating and not eating, a place to sleep safely and life impacted adversely, that upsets me. Too many of our fellow vets need every dime to get by. I just wish that there will be a honest meeting of the minds over the issures, not just the president's My Way Or NO Pay.

Up here in Northern Wisconsin if Hitler or Satan ran as Republicans, they would get elected, even if they ran against Christ. We have the Tea Party's guy representing us, and you know those people are tired of giving welfare to those of us who DO NOT DESERVE it. Representative Sean Duffy's office hung up on my wife when she asked if he was accepting his pay, when our compensation payment ends before November 1st. I am 100% disabled, but educated myself and worked doing psychatric care in a prison. When I sometimes needed a cane to walk the State of Wisconsin, my employer, medically terminated me. I could no longer physically restrain insane inmates. Still people tell me to stop looking for a handout and go to work. BTW Air evaced in 1966 for surgery in military hospital, and then in 1989 cancer of the esophagus that the VAs doc said was from chemical exposure. I have hurt everyday since 1964 and been sick every day since 1989 when I had surgery again for cancer. I got my degree on my own as the VA never came through with GI Bill and I did not get a full settlement for over forty years after discharge. Still, I guess I should stop whining, hand over my house at the end of the month and fade away, as old military are supposed to do. I really cannot justify the PEOPLE of American honoring the contract they made with all of us worthless beggars. Can you? Die NOW for the good of your country and stop the financial drain. They are bound and determined to make the people suffer so they go to these lengths to make it appear as if there is a major problem. The president can fund whatever he wants since the IRS is still taking in billions every month in taxes. It is your president who chooses to shut down these offices by not funding them. Next will be S.S. since that makes the news and the truth does not. So, you get a clue and pay attention to just who or what you are voting for. You are the problem and not the solution.

It seems looking at the overall blog, that even Vets like us are confused by what our politicians are doing to our country. Affordable Care Act, is really becoming the UNAffordable Care Act. I listen to some one the street reporters asking which was better ObamaCare or the Affordable Care Act, to a person everyone thought ACA was much better and that Obamacare was bad for everyone... DUH!!! It is ashame that as a country we have gotten this bad, that the people who are really electing our goverment have become such drooling boobs.. I grew up a Dem because my faimly was union and we were all taught that the Rebublicans were only for Big Business.. Well who is exempting Big Business, Gov, Union eletes, and the White house from the ACA? How can we argue over this "Law" well when the president can decide to ignore his signature law for his friends and himself, but tell US the common people we have to obay the "Law" then is that legal or does it basically say, that the real money behind the Dems are above the law.. Sounds something like a communist country where those at the top are above the law and it is up to the backs of the rest to support them. When the President can keep "his federal golf course" open so he can play as often as he chooses, but close the VA, the Monuments, and close the roads to Private Owned monuments like Mount Vernion and others, Not Honor our dead, by not allowing Death Benifits to be paid, but can suggest we send more money to his causes, it is a shame.. I just pray we survive the next 3 years, and that the nation is not dumb enough to bring back more of the same, or that somehow Harry Reid and company do not come up with a way to let him have another term or the office for life.

It's nice to have a place to sound off, but action is what is needed if any meaningful change is to occur. If we really care about what is happening in this country to need to start making calls to the White House, our Senators and Representatives and maybe organize some peaceful rallies to show the government we pay their salaries and we're not getting our money's worth. It is unconscionable that our leaders are using their differences to perpetrate harm on Veterans and Americans so they can prove a point. Neither party deserves the right to govern unless they are putting the best interests of the American people first. That no longer happens. If that was the case they would be livling by the same rules and restrictions that their constituents have to live by. Rmember these days the next time you vote in an election and lets hope the apathy that has consumed so many of our citizens is transformed into pride and a sense of responsibility to insure that the future is full of hope and the American dream.

As per NYTimes, NBC, FOX, under the "leadership" of Obama, the families of those just KIA in Iraq, Afghanistan are being told: (because of SHUTDOWN) they can't get funds to go to Dover to pick up the remains of their loved ones, and they won't be paid for survivors benefits NOR funeral costs at this time. EVERY AMERICAN (linked to any current or past VETERAN) should call the White House, their senator, congressman, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and anyone else they can think of to make a complaint. If he can CONTINUE TO GO PAY GOLF (a couple of times a week, with US public paying for COSTLY security details) he can sign an order that these grieving families be helped and the deceased soldiers be treated in an HONORABLE WAY. HE is the one acting like a 2-bit dictator, "punishing" everyone during the shutdown. This is the 1st. time the Lincoln Memorial has been shut during ANY previous shutdown.

King, it is not the House that is holding the country hostage, they have passed numerious bills to fund the govt. It is the White House and the Senate (wonder who controls those two) that refuses to discuss the problem and reach a mutual agreement to put the govt back to work, after all they are getting (or will be) paid for not working. The Holly grail, the ACA or "The bill we have to pass to find out what's in it" will bankrupt the country only a little slower than not raising the Debt Limit. Maybe the White House should turn to Russia for a solution to this stand off as well. I have seen some here say it is because the President is Black that the House will not talk with him, He has said he will not talk with them till he gets what HE wants, and his puppet and A-Kisser Reid supports him, screw the country go play golf, basket ball, or campain on something else. Disgusting is as Disgusting doew. Ours and other nations intel, as well as proven activities by a bad Iraq govt got us into the second war with Iraq. Those never found wepons of mass distruction have been found in Syria and there were satalite shots of convoys goning from Iraq to Syria prior to our going in to Iraq, the delay due to the wonderful Clintons degrading the militarys abality to move in a timely mannor into Iraq. The House has offered to negotiate with Prince Harry and Emperior Obama and they only reply, GOP give us what we demand and we will talk with you after you have given in. The House has passed numerious bills to keep the govt going which Harry and your beloved president (little P on purpose) have refused to allow a vote on, because if the Senate did vote with the House, then the president would VETO and it would be too blatent that HE is the real enemy of this country. It is your president that ordered via his Appointed directors to cause as much pain as possible to the average pieons that they can, so the a**kissing liberal media can have something to say, and point to people who represent the nation's real wishes to say it is the TEA Party's fault. Would there even be a need for the TEA Party, if GOP had been really doing their job instead of rubber stamping the demands of our beloved leader.. Listen to the speaches made in the 30s and early 40s to the other beloved leader that wanted to control the world. Grow up and face it, this country is going down the drain, it is a media hype that keeps saying all this is for the middle class. That is crap, the middle class they are pointing to is the low end of the working class, just above poverty (level set by govt) to a level just barely above what is considered the Median income of the primary working class. the middle class is not 30,0000 something to less than 90,000 if it more like 45,000 to 150,000 that dispicable group Obama orginally wanted more taxes from... Between Vet diabaliaties benies (earned with a lot of p[ain and service not just handed out) Retirement from 27 years service, and holding two full time jobs I am in that original 125,000 target the White House pimp called RICH... If I am so rich why do I have to work every day. It would be better to be on wellfare and other tax free subsistance and stay home and complain the govt should give me more.. My disposable income would be almost the same.

The American Legion is doing its own partisan apologism by declaring that it's because "Congress and the White House won't talk to each other," when it's purely those GOP Hose members who signed a letter saying they will not pass a continuing resolution unless the Affordable Care Act, a PUBLIC LAW, UPHELD BY THE SCOTUS, gets defunded. It's only the GOP who are behind this holding the fuctions of the U. S. government and those veterans and citizens it serves hostage. Why should the White House negotiate with hostage takers? Speaking as a military retiree, I am deeply, deeply ashamed at those who swear to uphold and defend the Constitution, yet wink at the 14th Amendment violation of the balking on honoring our debt and who swore in the Preamble to maintain law and order when the ACA, also known as Obamacare is now the law of the lend, then act as though it were anyone but the Tea Party and House Speaker Boehner who are responsible for the havoc wreaked by the shutdown and impending debt ceiling. I was at the National COnvention and saw all the empty seats that bespeak an organization who has let the right-wing fringe co-opt their influence and it will be the death of membership recruitment among younger veterans if you the national Legion leadership don't stop this partisan hackery.

If he wants to relax by playing some golf every once in a while, that's his right. Unless you gave the proportionate criticism to GW Bush for all the time he spent on his ranch in Crawford, TX, your assessment is a double standard. Unless you have more criticism for Speaker Boehner imposing a twoo on, one week off House schedule, leading to one of the mose do-nothing Congresses, it would be unjust to begrudge Obama a round of golf, since compared to Bush and the House of Representatives under Speaker Boehner, Obama's on duty more than any of them. Obama didn't close anything. You are merely buying into the right wing spins when 80 or so GOP members of CONGRESS signed a memo weeks ago saying they would shut down the government unless Obamacare was defunded. It was the GOP who shut down the government, not Obama. The COnstitution places that responsibility firmly in the hands of Congress. Sending legisation with piecemeal funding to appease certain constituencies, while throwing others under the bus is NOT a bargain.

A round of golf?? HIS government shut down and HIS refusal to budege and HIS minions' refusal to cooperate is leading to a halt in my VA disability check. I pose your same question to you. DO YOU HAVE THAT LITTLE COMPASSION? I'm a vet on a fixed income, not a president or public official with a big salary. HIS cramming Obamacare down our throats caused this mess in the first place.

October 8, 2013 - 10:40pm

You are clearly reacting to current dilemma and slamming the Republicans for the entire quagmire of the federal government. This is about not raising the debt limit. This has been ongoing for over three years. The sequester is the result of a bipartisan committee that was tasked to bring government spending into control. Just why do think this is just about ACA? Your message clearly states that you are focused only on tidbits and what the media puts out. There are two types of military retiree's: Those who could not make it on the outside and those who stayed to serve their country. Your typing is lousy too.

October 9, 2013 - 8:28am

Dave Gross, who really shut down the government? Do you really know? Did the republicans not vote for the ACA? How come at this very moment they are trying to defund it? You know why, really!! They are very afraid that it will work and anything this BLACK PRESIDENT has tried to enact, the REPUBLICANS have been against it FROM DAY ONE! They are playing a very dangerous game fellow. It may backfire on ALL OF US. The politicians are still getting paid but yet our fallen comrades can't get the money for their final disposition. Shame, shame!! And what are YOU willing to do about that, BLAME THE PRESIDENT!! Put blame where it belongs!

SC

October 9, 2013 - 10:21am

And there it is....every time someone disagrees with what this idiot of a president does someone has to bring up that it has to do with him being black??? He could be plaid for all I care he's an idiot with no idea how to run a country and is surrounded by a staff of morons. I get so tired of hearing "oh you don't like what the president is doing? it must be because you don't like a black man in office", oh there's plenty of smart capable black men that could do the job. He isn't the one.

rwearl

October 9, 2013 - 8:26pm

its shameful to portray the President in those terms "idiot of a president". As noted earlier GWBush sent our children into Iraq despite clear evidence of no nexus to Al Qaeda which led to needless deaths of American soldiers, and unprecedented draining of the surplus budget. There is no excuse for that single-minded arrogance and there will never be an excuse for that. This President has never been arrogant and has tried to provide real responsible leadership on behalf of our country. As a veteran I can identify with that. As a conservative I don't like out of control spending and would like to see the debt and spending controlled. However, the actions of the small Republican faction of tea party- to extort the country when law and supreme court say otherwise- are akin to the same arrogance of GWB. This arrogance can only be traced to the fact that this President is black. There is no other reasonable explanation for the fervor of the tea party. What is meant by taking America back? Back from what? Why is the govt shutdown now? Not because congress cares about our country; only because congress can't accept taking orders from their superior who is black. I just hope this country grows up from this madness when a woman is finally elected President.

After all the work the VA and I have put in over the last4 month. First of all, the WWII vets aren't the only vets who suffered from the government shut down. There are plenty of other services that were shut down as well. More important than the WWII memorial. All of it could have been avoided simply if congress would have passed a clean bill. This isn't the time to play politics. What is there to negotiate? A law that is already funded, upheld by the SCOTUS, and reaffirmed by the reelection of the sitting president? Second, the President is not Socialist. Capitalism is alive and well. The President hasn't done anything to denounce our free market system. Corporatism or crony capitalism has done more to ruin this country. Big money and high paid lobbyist are what is corrupting Washington. Also the false propaganda from both sides of the fence has divided us and is getting awfully close to dividing our buddies in the armed forces as well. By the way the first universal health care system in the U.S. was signed by John Adams. It was the Act for the Relief of Sick & Disabled Seamen, July 1798. That, my brothers, is universal healthcare however you want to try to twist it as not being universal. Why shouldn't we allow U.S. citizens to have similar health care we had while in service. It won't be free but at least these people will be have to be responsible for their own health care and not on the dime of others when they go to a emergency room. Anyway vote the clean bill and raise the debt ceiling now. Why hold the country hostage for demagoguery of a few extremist? Quit calling people names! That isn't the kind of honor I learned from my service to my country. Using denigrating names is dishonorable in public discourse unless you are that ignorant. When one faction(the Tea Party) controls legislation in government, it gets pretty hairy. If we allow it now what will happen if a different faction enters the fray? Be careful of what you wish for.

October 8, 2013 - 11:16pm

MrM, the SCOTUS only ruled that it was a tax and not a penalty. they never ruled on the constitutionality of the ADA. All laws are to be enforced EQUALLY, not pick and chose as Obama has done. unions get a pass, government workers get a pass, but you and I??? NO PASS! Also as far as your act for relief of sick and disabled seamen, that is NOT UNIVERSAL!! Not all are seamen!

Darius

The House of Representatives is asking for negotiations. It is the president who refuses to negotiate. It is also the White House which closed the Veterans Memorials in DC, not the House of Representatives.

October 9, 2013 - 8:35am

Darius, why TRY TO NEGOTIATE with little children when they don't seem to listen? If you spank them now that is called "CHILD ABUSE!" The HOUSE what to take their ball because they can not get their way! Where did you get that fact about the White House shutting down The Veterans Memorials?? I would really like to know! What are your references?? Fox news, Hannity, Rush??

Laura R. Standley

October 8, 2013 - 11:18pm

The House of Representatives is taking hostages, all for a LAW that is MANDATORY spending and not subject to the continuing resolution in the first place. Why should the President negotiate with hostage-takers? After all, it was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who, after the last debt ceiling fight, commented that government funding was "a hostage worth ransoming." The democrats and White House have already compromised on a CR funding at Sequestration levels, despite how Sequestration has stymied economic recovery.

I am sorry for the typos in my prior post, I was upset and in a rush to get it off my chest. Like so many of you other Vets I am proud to have served our nation and its wonderful if sometimes low information people. I am also a 27 year vet, having served in Viet Nam 69 & 70, Granada, Bosnia, El Salvador, Isreal, and was active but not deployed during Desert Storm. I cried 9-11, and have shead many tear for the country as it is becoming. I understood amnisty after nam to heal the country but it was not enough, I felt they should have pardoned those that had the guts to go to jail for what they believed. If you have not put it together I was SF and have done things I am and am not always proud of for our leaders, but ultimately I would do it again if it meant keeping one good American alive. I do not believe in hand outs, except to reach out to help those that cannot help themselves. I hate to see this country in such a mess, due to Hope and Change, for a group that claims to be so transparent the spend more time behind closed doors only to come out to put others down. I see them and our president (again little P) as phonies that are trying to take us down a failing path, the only transparency is seeing through the lies and mis directions. When we loose an Ambasidor but do nothing about it, but support the very people that were directly or indirectly to blame it makes me sick. I can only pray the People of this Proud Republic grow up and vote out those that would see us taken down. It is time to stop aplogizing for America's Greatness, and do more to insure it remains the country we all served proudly.

I'm sad that we have a president who is destroying this country. I'm more upset that he has so many people who have re-elected him. Knowledgeable people knew in 2008 that his grandparents, mentor , Frank Davis, his sponsors and colleagues were all communists. Valarie Jarrett is from a communist family and so is David Axelrod. He wrote for the communist Chicago Star. He worked for a Saul Alinsky disciple and taught Alinsky tactics for Acorn. His records are all closed, including his passport. Like others who have bothered to research Barack Hussein Obama, I could go on and on. The problem is that most Americans don't really know him. Financial collapse doesn't worry him. It only makes it easier to increase federal control. The Constitution can be suspended, as it is already ignored by Obama. RIP America.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND, YOU SAY OBAMA DOESN'T CARE. LOOKS TO ME LIKE THE REPUBLICANS DON'T CARE. FIRST THEY WON'T LET THE BUDGET PASS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO HOLD THE MONEY HOSTAGE FOR A BILL THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN PASSED, WENT THROUGH THE SUPREME COURT AND IS NOW LAW. MEDICAL AND HEALTH HAS BEEN A MONEY MAKING VENTURE IN THE STATES FOR TOO LONG AND PEOPLE'S LIVES SHOULD NOT BE MONEY MAKING. I HAVE ALL THE HEALTH CARE I NEED BUT OTHERS DON'T. IF YOUR SICK WHO THE HECK CAN AFFORD $100'S OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR AN OPERATION? ONLY MUTLI MILLIONS AIRS. THE MIDDLE CLASS CAN'T AFFORD TO. I'VE BEEN STATIONED IN MANY OTHER COUNTRIES AND THEY DON'T PICK AND CHOSE TO GIVE HEALTH CARE TO ONLY THE RICH AND THE MIDDLE CLASS GO BROKE TRYING TO PAY EXTREAM AMOUNTS FOR PARTICAL CARE THAT'S CRAZY AND WRONG. NOW THIS AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE IS PRETTY MUCH IN PLACE, LET IT GO AND DO WHAT WE NEED TO DO AS AMERICANS. ITS THE LAW AND BOENER AND HIS GUYS ARE HOLDING THIS BACK UNLESS PRESIDENT OBAMA GIVES UP AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE. THAT IS WHAT THE GOP WANTS AND IT IS NOT OBAMA'S DOING, THE HEALTH CARE ACT IS THE LAW. HOW CAN YOU SAY THIS IS OBAMA'S FAULT WHEN BOEHNER AND HIS COLLEDGES AND CAUSING THIS. HEALTH CARE IS HERE TO STAY. THEY SHOULD SUCK IT UP AND CARRY ON WITH LIFE INSTEAD OF ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF GRADE SCHOOLS BULLIES. "IF WE CAN'T GET IT OUR WAY WE WILL TAKE OUR VOTES AND SHUTDOWN THE GOV...WRONG AND UNFAIR! TO THE CITIZENS. THE CARE IS THAT LAW AND I WANT THE GOV TO RESPECT THIS CARE FOR OUR CITIZENS AND NOT LET THE U.S. BE KNOWN THAT YOUR HEALTH CARE DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH MONEY YOU CAN AFFORD. MEDICAL/PILLS AND ALL OF THE MEDICAL FIELDS ARE OVER PRICED AND IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT, THEN YOU DIE AND DIE BROKER THEN YOU WERE. DON'T BE IN DENIAL THIS IS THE TRUTH! Yes I am a Vet retired and got messed up by the chemicals in the Gulf War.. This President is being treated unfairly. The only reason the Government is closed is because of the Affordable Health Care Act! it is about time! People need this. You don't determine who gets health care by what they can afford and medical should not be a money making venture AND IT HAS BEEN IN THE PAST. BOEHNER AND THE OTHER SHOULD SUCK IT UP! IT IS NOW A LAW. THE GOP TRIED TO GO TO THE SUPREME COURT TO STOP THE CARE ACT AND LOST. SO NOW THEY ARE HOLDING THE REST OF THE U.S. HOSTAGE (AND I BELIEVE THAT TRULY). I HAVE ALL THE CARE I NEED BUT OTHERS DON'T. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE THAT COULDN'T PAY 100'S OF THOUSAND OF DOLLARS GET TURNED DOWN AND DIE BECAUSE OF OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM AND IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME. THE MEDICAL IS RICHER BY THE COST $100.00 AND MORE FOR PRESCRIPTIONS. $87,000.00 FOR A SIMPLE OPERATION. WHO IN THE MIDDLE CLASS CAN AFFORD THAT? TOO MANY GOOD FAMILIES HAVE GONE BROKE TRYING TO KEEP THEIR LOVED ONES ALIVE BECAUSE OF THE COST OF HEALTH CARE. AS I SAID, "HEALTH CARE SHOULD NOT BE A MONEY MAKING VENTURE". IT IS A NECESSITY NOT A LUXURY". IT'S NOT FARE FOR THE GOP TO HOLD OFF PASSING THE BUDGET BECAUSE THEY WANT THE MEDICAL SOCIETY TO KEEP HEALTH A BUSINESS. WRONG. IS IS BEING HELD HOSTAGE BY THE GOP SIDE OF THE CONGRESS BECAUSE THEY LOST AND THE AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE ACT IS ABOARD AND WILL TAKE PLACE. STOP ACTING LIKE SPOILED CHILDREN AND DON'T AS THE U.S. TO GIVE UP OUR HEALTH FOR YOUR MONEY MAKING VENTURES. STOP AND PASS THE BUDGET. YOU ALREADY LOST AND THE CARE ACT IS WHAT THE AMERICAN NORMAL FOLKS NEED. THANKS OBAMA AND FRIENDS PLEASE KEEP IT UP. THIS SHUTDOWN I ALL ON THE REPUBLICANS AND ITS NOT RIGHT WHAT THEY ARE DOING. GOP IT ALL ON YOU SO LET IT GO AND LETS GET ON WITH OUR COUNTRIES NEEDS. SSG S.D. LOFFREDO U.S. ARMY.... DAUGHTER IS RETIRED FROM THE AIRFORCE. WE CARE!

SteveD, in later years of the '30s the peace loving people of Germany saw storm clouds forming and didn't recognize what they were watching. All they heard were blame-gaming, people group division, any kind of a set-back in any way of a normal day, it was the fault of that group of Society on that side of the street. The populace was blind sided because they were too involved in their 9-to-5 life style, looking up after Europe's great depression. Those same clouds are back and are here forming over our heads and everyone does not have the time to read the actions coming out of Washington. The rider of the big-blue plane, vacation guy has done more damage to this country than any single man since the birth of this nation. His play-book is straight out of Bob Mugabe's library. It has been well demonstrated over the past two weeks by the dictator in the WH how easy it will be to roach smash any block of this nation. One snap of the finger, they shut down the little things in life of what the older generation enjoyed without costing too much into each families critical funds, parks, hallow grounds, med centers. I'm very surprised the Federal highways were not closed, all it would have taken would be a suggestion. It seems that there are many people here and around the country that have forgotten any civics or politica science class they ever took in school. The House votes the money, the Senate spends the money and this president (not even worth a capital P) is a socialist. When he can say you have to do everything I want then we can negotiate sounds more like a Dictator, my way or the highway. There are many openions here I agree with and many more that I don't. What I do know is Fox is the only network that is willing to have a differing openion. The Tea party canidates that were elected represent the people that put them in office as do the Libs and RINOs and the few real Dems and Republicans in office. It is time we probably do set term limits, do away with life time retirement for Presidents and Congress, and change the party names to something more realistic such as Conservative, Liberals, and Socalist parties like they do in other countries so people can vote for what they want. Freedom with limits, or indentured servitude to a minority that will never pull its on weight. Close the borders, enforce the Laws we have or change them by vote, don't just pass new ones to blow more smoke up the peoples bottoms.. And in answer to those that think we don't do enough for the Illegals and Criminals (they both mean the same thing) then take them home with you, or go back with them where they belong. In any other country on earth, an criminal is punished not rewarded. This is still the Greatest Contry on Earth, we just need to remember why, and go back to our roots and make it that way again. Go to a responsible spending control and get the outgoing hemorage of money under control, because we have to! 3 Prepare yourself for succession, because all those who have incumbent in front of their names will not get your vote...Yep, because we have to. Finally tell the parties wh are orchestrating this mess to go out and recruit new candidates to run because there is going to be lots of openings.

Vincent Riggs

October 8, 2013 - 4:49pm

I agree! The House has passed 4 bills to stop this and specifically fund Veterans benefits. The Senate refuses to even go to a vote on this. Regardless of Obama Care, which is a fiasco in itself, there is absolutely NO reason to not pass those specific bills int law....other than the Senate failing to up hold there oaths of office.

king

October 9, 2013 - 9:18am

Vincent Riggs, it is not the SENATE who is holding up anything, it's those house members who could care less about the will of the people. They don't have to worry about losing their jobs because they are from districts that were MADE for them (mostly white). No primary opponents and they feel that they can get away with anything that they want!

Don't you think it has been irresponsible over the past several years to spend more than the USA's income. That is a recipe for the situation that we are in now. On a personal level if you continue to spend more than your income allows and borrow to make up the difference at some point you accumulate a whole lot of debt, kind of like our 17 trillion debt that we are now looking at. I think at some point this debt needs to be paid down or completely off. What say you?

Thank you, I am so tired of all the Obama bashing... We are talking about loosing $100millions of dollars each day our Government is shut down... People need to wake up Other countries are watching us...We provide for other countries but leave our own behind.. Do the worst thing this hurting economy doesn't need.. Close Down the US Government, devastating. So many are withdrawing all there money from our banks. The worst putting all of the American Citizens in a state of fear and extreme panic because our congress can not get it together. So punish the rest of the United States? They need to free up us and lock themselves in until they can make a decision ... Like Juries have to do... They need to stop acting like kids. By now even kids would know to get this government up and running again... So Angry, here in COLORADO, I volunteer helping the flood victims and the congress shuts down our funding? How cruel.. I agree a terries act against the American People.. There should be a law against this and those keeping our government shut down should be punished (loose 1/2 there pay for a year to be donated to help others! THIS HAS TO STOP!!! Ms. Val

Val, you are closer to the real problem that what I have read. The bashing, dirt throwing, finger pointing, and all out disrespectfulness is root of the problem. It is a disgrace for the United States' elected officials to not pass a balanced budget. Nearly all comments address a problem of the government. It is time to stop talking about the problems and start talking about what to about it.

Blaming congress for the shutdown? Ridiculous. Read the Constitution. They are empowered to hold on to our purse strings. In an attempt to alienate and cause undue harm for maximum political effect, Obama barricades an "open air" WW II monument that is privately funded. Why? The answer is obvious. He is using veterans as a political hammer to destroy our Republic and the opposition.

JOHN JARRARD

October 8, 2013 - 3:43pm

I realize we do not live in a perfect country or world. But the entire world is "laughing" at what is suppose to be a powerful nation over the fact we cannot seem to get our act together. As far as I'm concerned all the political power brokers in Washington share the blame. And we as Americans also share some of the blame because we have set on our duff while these politicians have passed laws and made themselves more powerful than the people who elected them. I'm sick of them all. And the hatred that appears in the face of John Boehner when he is with the President or speaks of the President is unbelievable. All of them need to stop acting like first graders and take care of the people and the countries best interest. We had 8 years of a Republican President and they all still fought like dogs. As a Veteran the politicians in Washington make me ashamed. Perhaps if there pay is stopped and they feel the pinch of having no pay check they might get to work and act like adults and solve this thing. It is time for a CHANGE....term limits and elected officials who care more about people than themselves!!!!!

LineDawg

October 9, 2013 - 12:37am

You do relies that if you took the pay away from the gov't it would have NO effect. They make more in backdoor funding, freebees, favors, whatever you want to call them for doing political favors that their "pay" is chump-change. Want to hurt them? Make them play by the same rules that they make us follow. Why are they "opting-out" of odumbasscare? If it was that great wouldn't they want to be in it? Why does the US continue to pay foreign aid to countries that want to kill us? Why does this gov't continue to attack the military(VA & Pensions) and the elderly(SocSec) everytime there is an issue with funding. What we need is "Common-Sense" gov't by the "People", not career politicians. After I served my country for 24 years and 2 wars, why is my retirement and VA benefits being held hostage and the people that were trying to kill me getting paid?

MikeThe Tiger

October 8, 2013 - 5:38pm

Gary, I'm afraid you are wrong. The government has been shut down numerous times in the past because a budget wasn't passed by the beginning of the fiscal year (1 Oct). The difference is that in the past all federal functions considered essential to life, health and safety have been kept open for just that reason. This time the President has ordered all federal facilities closed until a Budget Bill (that includes ACA) or a continuing resolution authority (CRA) has passed. So it is our President who has closed everything down except those essential to life (like Hospitals). Hell, the President has even ordered people who own their own homes to leave them because they are located on Federal lands. This is without any kind of Court order. This is strictly a power play by Mr. Obama who thinks we are going to blame the Republicans, but it was the Republicans in the House who sent 4 bills to the Senate that would have kept the entire federal government running, except for ACA. It was Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Obama who said no and shut down the government. Wake up! It's a fact!

The National Commander, Dellinger is wrong in blaming the shutdown on the House of Representatives, the Senate and President Obama. The shutdown belongs squarely on the shoulders of Senator Ted Cruz and The Republican caucus of the House of Representatives. You cannot negotiate when you are being threatened, that is called extortion and that is what the House of Representatives are doing right now. They need to put the clean CR to a vote so all go on record for their individual vote. That takes leadership from one man, that man is Speaker John Boehner. He is at fault. Not the Senate nor the President.

Mr.M

October 8, 2013 - 10:22pm

Mikey, If you look back in the minutes of the 113 Congress, You may see that the Republicans failed to send nominations to committee for talks on the budget. This was done multiple times. Where were they then? Months before the shutdown? Sounds like they were up to something fishy then? This is what is called extortion by the Tea Party.

Donald Ford

October 8, 2013 - 3:10pm

Rightwing Extremists are breaking the law with their present tactics. I stand with the President in rejecting their ultimatums. If he were to give in to their demands this time where will it end? What if the tables were turned and it was leftwing extremists demanding an expansion of government programs and they were successful in shutting down the government? Where was the outcry and outrage when the previous president gave away the surplus to the 1%ers and took us into an unprovoked war in Iraq? I say NO to extremists.

Mike The Tiger

Politics as usual. It shows how irresponsible both the Democrats and the Republicans truly are. IF the Democrats were truly about the people they would figure out how to have the fewest people hurt by the partial shutdown. On the other hand the Republican in the House should realize that the train wreck of Obama Care is here get over it and try to fix it. Repeal is going nowhere. If the Democrats were truly responsible they would be getting the Affordability Health Care Act fixed so it is not a train wreck. Unfortunately what both parties don’t seem to realize about half the people are for Obama Care and half against. For government to work effectively both sides have to do better than they are now.
