Legacy Run blows goal out of water

Surpassing its goal by nearly $200,000, this year's Legacy Run brought in more than $634,000 for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund.

The American Legion Riders traveled from Indianapolisto Milwaukee over the course of five days with more than 240 motorcycles covering 1,400 miles and traversing six states. The Legion Riders collected funds prior to the ride and then received contributions from Legion posts and non-Legionnaires along the way.

Immediate American Legion Past National Commander Clarence Hill participated in the entire run, which started in Indianapolis Aug. 22 and traveled through Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Minnesota before reaching Wisconsin.

"The biggest impression I got was on all the stops that we made," Hill said. "People gave $1, the worker who gave me 50 cents, people who gave $5, $10, $20; on every stop, when we explained what we were doing, we got a donation. Everyone identifies with the need to educate our children, and they understand the hardships associated with doing that when a family has lost a parent. This cause is an easy one to support."

The Run, in its fifth year, has generated more than $2 million for the Legacy Fund, which raises funds to cover college expenses for the children of U.S. servicemembers killed on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
