Just a couple of hours after the leader of the nation’s largest veterans organization took strong issue with the White House’s description of a bill which would restore death benefits for fallen military servicemembers, American Legion National Commander Daniel Dellinger  thanked the president for signing the belated legislation.

“While I’m still disappointed that the White House press secretary called this important legislation a ‘gimmick,’ I am extremely gratified that President Obama has signed it into law and the military families that have sacrificed so much can now get this small financial benefit that they would prefer not to need in the first place,” Dellinger said. “This is proof that when the Senate, House and president want to get something done, they can make it happen. Now let’s get on with re-opening the government and making sure that veterans and their families can receive their benefits, visit their memorials and continue the work of keeping us safe.”

The CIC could have restored death benefits by issuing an executive order. Legislation was not needed. Why thank him?!?!

On 9 Oct 13 the head of the VA testified before Congress that VA Disability Benefits will NOT be paid if the government shut down continues. Consistent with the Statutory authorization of the American Legion and our founding Charter, the National Commander, the National Staff and all Comrades should be lobbying the Executive and Legislative Branches to do their jobs NOW.

What kind of nut thinks our CIC is not an American?

Why would you thank a Commander-in-Chief who should have looked out for the troops to begin with? And where was Secretary Hagel--a vet himself? This is like thanking your kid for not totally destroying your car.

I received an Email from the folks who handle the military retirement checks saying retirement checks should not be affected by the shutdown. Now if the government defaults on its obligations by not raising the debt ceiling, that may be a different thing. Stand by!
