During The American Legion’s Fall Meetings Wednesday in Indianapolis, the Samsung American Legion National Selection Committee announced the 2013 Samsung American Legion Scholarship recipients, each receiving $20,000 for undergraduate studies. An additional 89 finalists were awarded $1,100 each.

The nine Samsung Scholars are:

  • Cameron Akker of Sammamish, Wash.
  • Tery Burt of Chesnee, S.C.
  • Dallas Debruin of Greenfield, Ohio
  • Megan Kelley of Danbury, Neb.
  • Gabrielle Lessen of Alexandria, La.
  • Austin Owen of Vestavia Hills, Ala.
  • Gregory Scalise of Brewster, Mass.
  • Aidan Schneider of Flagstaff, Ariz.
  • Troy Timmerman of Marshall, Minn.

In 1996, Samsung, the South Korean multinational electronics leader, endowed an educational scholarship fund of $5 million to The American Legion for administration to direct descendants of U.S. war veterans. It was a gesture of appreciation from Samsung to U.S. military veterans for coming to the aid of South Korea in its war against invading forces from China and North Korea. Through interest earned on the fund’s principal, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has awarded more than $4.9 million in grants to nearly 1,700 eligible applicants, giving young men and women an opportunity to achieve a higher education.

The Legion recognized Samsung’s generosity by presenting the company with its 2013 Patriot Award. Yang Kyu Kim, president and CEO of Samsung Electronics North America, accepted the award on Aug. 27 during the Legion’s 95th national convention in Houston. Read his acceptance speech here.

My son will be attending this year's Buckeye Boys State and we've noticed on the scholarship paperwork that it has places for both SAT scores and ACT scores. Are the boys required to have taken both tests or will just the ACT score be sufficient? Also, is the FAFSA information needed to submit this scholarship application? Thank you.

Would love some help with the Children of Warriors Scholarship. We live in MN and all of our family are in OK. My daughter would like to apply for this scholarship, but it requires that the person that makes her eligible be a member of the local MN post. Because we are originally from OK and all grandparents live in OK, the membership affiliation is in OK. Does this mean she's totally excluded from this scholarship?
