Legacy Run leaves Indianapolis Aug. 17

Imagine hundreds of motorcycles of all shapes and colors roaring through the fields, forests, hills and mountains of eight states. Now imagine these riders to be wartime veterans and supporters riding over five days and 1,360 miles to make possible a college education for the children of fallen heroes.

American Legion National Commander Dan Dellinger will lead the ninth annual American Legion Legacy Run from the Legion’s national headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana to the 96th annual American Legion National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Sponsored by USAA, the Legacy Run will leave Indianapolis the morning of Aug. 17 and travel through Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina before arriving Aug. 21 in Charlotte, the site of the national convention in Charlotte. Along the way, riders will raise money for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund, which provides college scholarships to the children of U.S. military personnel killed on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

“As a consequence of America’s war on terror, many children of our active-duty military personnel are now members of single-parent families,” Dellinger said. “In most cases their chances to attend college have greatly diminished. These children are entitled to receive some money from the government for education, but it is not nearly enough.

“A solid opportunity to attend higher education should be a reality for these families. An education is a powerful way to show our thanks. The American Legion is committed to making that happen.”

Registration fees and generous donations from USAA®, Jennifer Jo Cobb Racing, Fans 4 Truckers LLC and other sponsors serve to offset the costs of the Legacy Run. Every cent donated to the Legacy Fund goes directly into the fund.
