Returning Memorial Day to its original date will not prevent anyone, that isn't already aware of the holiday's significance, from treating the holiday as a springboard to summer. Those Americans that recognize the sacrifice or their brothers and sisters in wartime do not need a three-day weekend to recognize or remember those sacrifices or the fallen; they remember because it is part and parcel of who they are; veterans and the families of veterans. Finally, considering all the really important issues, from terrorism to Beltway political scandals, to a vastly deteriorated economy, that face us today there are far more important things that need to be dealt with than the observance date of Memorial Day.
To veterans and their families every day is Memorial Day there isn't any need for a return to anything to restore our memories. Getting the rest of the citizens to remember won't be done by restoring the original date; the only thing that might raise civilian recognition of the reason for Memorial Day is the proper education of school children about the sacrifices of citizens in uniform.
Rather than demand a return to the original day of observation, get involved in your school systems and help to educate those that, thankfully, haven't yet been called to serve and through that education raise the awareness of their parents and other members of the community.
