Centennial spotlight: New York Post 396

Members of Winnek American Legion Post 396 in Geneva, N.Y., asked the Buffalo Bills professional American football team if they would be interested in having the post’s color guard — dressed in World War I uniforms — present the flag before a football game. The post presented colors on Sept. 21, 1997 when the Bills played the Indianapolis Colts.

Post 396’s color guard, called “The Doughboys,” World War I uniforms feature “bowl” helmets and khaki-colored, gabardine fatigues. The fatigues were ordered new from a Pennsylvania company, but the helmets saw action in Belgium. In addition, other Legionnaires have loaned family relics, such as belts.
