Suicide Prevention. October is National Anti-bully Month and Auxiliary member Kim Harvey is helping to end school bullying through her Indiana-based nonprofit Angels & Doves. Harvey and her late mother founded Angels & Doves in 2010 after becoming alarmed with the growing number of young children committing suicide due to being bullied. Angles & Doves empowers and uplifts children with its three-part program: an in-school presentation by Harvey, a suicide prevention book and a peacekeeping activity.

Harvey travels nationwide and has spoken to and educated more than 15,000 students in grades K-12 about preventing bullying, violence and suicides.

"Bullying has become a horrible hate crime in our schools, and it’s even happening in preschools," said Harvey, a member of Unit 155 in Carmel, Ind., to American Legion Children & Youth Conference attendees last month. "After so many times of hearing something (negative), children end up wearing the traits that the bully puts on them. But we have the power as adults to empower our youth and give them the things that they need just through the words that we speak. We could keep them from becoming the target; we could keep them from becoming the bully."
