The American Legion launched a 501( c )3 nonprofit trust in 2010 that enables members and friends to either make a general donation to the organization or pick and choose which specific programs they want to support. An alum of Boys Nation, for instance, may want to donate specifically to help pay for that program. A veteran who received assistance from an American Legion service officer may wish to give to the Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation division. A family that received help from Legionnaires after a loved one’s discharge from Walter Reed may want to designate a gift for Heroes to Hometowns. The American Legion Finance Commission oversees distribution of any funds that are not designated for a particular program.
