"Angel of Bastogne" familiar to Flanders Field Legionnaires

The death on Aug. 23 of Augusta Chiwy, a Belgian nurse famous for treating injured soldiers during Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge, had special resonance for Legionnaires at Flanders Field Post 2 in Belgium.
Post Commander Joseph Schram was at the premiere of the movie “The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne” – about Chiwy – which first played in Bastogne. He met Chiwy herself at the U.S. Embassy during a later showing of the movie.
A few other members of the post met Chiwy before her death at 94, but a planned encounter with then-National Commander Daniel Dellinger in June 2014 fell through due to health issues.
