Joint remembrance

David F. Lilley Post 14 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, collaborated with the Puerto Vallarta Navy League on a Nov. 11 event to mark both Veterans Day and the Commonwealth-nation tradition of Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day is observed on the second Saturday of November – or the one closest to Nov. 11 – as the anniversary of the end of World War I.
According to Post 14 Commander Dennis Rike, about 150 people attended the event, citizens of the United States, Canada and Mexico. Among the speakers were Kelly Trainor of the American Consulate; Brian Topolniski, retired from the Canadian air force; and from The American Legion, Rike; Ron Abbe, commander of the Department of Mexico; and Fred Crowley, post judge advocate, who read the famous “In Flanders Fields.”
In the midst of the proceedings, at 11:11 a.m., those gathered observed two minutes of silence “for the fallen soldiers of the Royal Canadian Forces and the Armed Forces of America.” The event ended with a balloon release.
