A pattern of remembrance

Margraten Post NL01 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is out and about quite often these days. Between the centennial commemoration of World War I, ongoing tributes to World War II and the approach of Memorial Day, post members are busy attending ceremonies and more.

Just in the last month, Post NL01 was represented at:

- a ceremony honoring the Wereth 11, a group of African-American soldiers executed by SS troops in 1944;

- the “Faces of Margraten” project, where members helped place more than 5,800 pictures of fallen soldiers in holders by their war graves;

- a remembrance ceremony for the B-17 Flying Fortress – “The Joker” – that went down at Bérisménil, Belgium, in 1944, killing seven.

The post also plans to be present at at least three events over Memorial Day weekend, two at American Battle Monuments Commission cemeteries. The post’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/PostNL01) is full of updates and photo galleries.

Post Commander Ray Perez commented on one of the Wereth ceremony postings, “To the members of the post: My heart is full of pride and I salute your dedication and devotion to our fallen heroes!” A sentiment that can be applied to Post NL01 year-round.
