I believe that a good "elmer" could introduce a potential Ham to radio, by using his station and good instruction. IRLP is just an excuse to use the internet as a substitute for a radio. It is entirely possible to provide instruction and support without avoiding radio experience. I am a VE and an instructor and believe that if you want to use a radio to communicate, that is Ham Radio. Any thing else, is not, in my opinion (for whatever that is worth).
