1. BELATED THANK YOU: The following thank-you note was received at
navymars.org:
QUOTE
I am reflecting on my time at sea during a MedCruise, a NATO
cruise and the first Persian Gulf War.
I can never forget the professionalism and selflessness that MARS
operators had in conjunction with local and long-distance phone
carriers to help me keep in touch with my family, even though it was
only for a few moments a month. This was obviously a long time ago,
before the proliferation and national rollout of the Internet, but
even still, this THANK YOU is a long time coming.
We, as a society, see veterans as 'heroes'. But what about you
guys? You are a part of the 'backbone' that kept myself and many of
my shipmates, lined up outside the radio room at all
hours of the morning, with the ships pitching and rolling, to just
get to hear our loved ones' voices even though we were oceans apart.
There were always smiles and sometimes tears as my shipmates came out
of that 'booth.'
Thanks again for your SUPPORT!

3. A quote by Erma Bombeck:
QUOTE
You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July
4, not with a parade of guns, tanks and soldiers who file by the
White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics
where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy and the flies
die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is
patriotism.

4. As we all gather to celebrate Independence Day this year, I ask
that you take the time to remember those who gave all their tomorrows
so we could celebrate today. In the words of Lee Greenwood:
QUOTE
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
UNQUOTE

Enjoy this Independence Day! It is special indeed.
5. MARS: Together we can achieve anything.
