With the new year, The American Legion Amateur Radio Club (TALARC) has become one of the nation’s largest active groups of federally licensed radio operators, officially surpassing the 2,000-member mark this week.
“New member applications continue to arrive almost every day,” said Marty Justis, president of TALARC. “With more American Legion radio nets becoming activated around the country, word about the Legion’s radio club is reaching more eligible members. We also see spikes in applications following our two major national operating events commemorating Veterans Day and The American Legion Birthday in March.”
The national radio club focuses on disaster preparedness and emergency communications, and many members have already been involved with their local Amateur Radio Emergency Service [ARES] and Emergency Management offices when they join TALARC. “Many ‘hams’ who are veterans join as a perfect match with their interests: camaraderie as veterans and Legionnaires, a specific dedication to community service, while enjoying the challenges and fun of amateur radio,” Justis said.
Membership in TALARC is free for all federally licensed amateur radio operators who are members of The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of The American Legion.
The March issue of The American Legion Magazine will include a feature article about amateur radio and TALARC.
