More than four decades after Pfc. Melvin Newlin was killed in action during the Vietnam War and posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor, his hometown of Wellsville, Ohio, still celebrates his service through its many memorials that keep his story alive.
When their oldest brother, Fred, was drafted, the Luchts knew the second in line, Herb, wasn’t far behind. Robert, then age 17, the youngest of the Luchts, decided to enlist with them in the U.S. Navy.
Upon graduating high school, I snuck to Yuma, Ariz., to marry my sweetheart, Wilma, on June 6, 1943. I was only 19. But the next few years would be very different for me, as I was drafted into the Armed Forces in October that year.
