It is probably not fair to try to isolate just one quality, a number of the qualities listed would probably in fact make an ideal candidate, however the days of the "Party" line and ideology is long since passed

If only one can be chosen, integrity gets my vote - but I like them all. I realize it is asking a lot, but I would like to see a prerequisite of prior military service to be commander-in-chief...

Those who aspire to be POTUS should have served in the military, how can they relate to those who have or are serving our nation. Washington is so out of touch with every day Americans, they've no clue what it's like to deal with the day to day reality of check to check while they bleed us dry, shame on them!

I cannot answer with just a single item. There are a number of things I look for in a candidate. Integrity is one, Toughness when it comes to standing for principles and against our enemies, Loyalty to our service personnel and most important to me is an individual that is grounded in strong Christion principles.

I think my number one virtue that I look for in any candidate is the ability and willingness work with all stake holders to get things done. That would include the willingness to compromise, consider new ideas, and just get down to work. The uncompromising partisan grid-lock in Washington, DC nowadays is more harmful to the country than just about anything else I can think of right now.
However, the President cannot do it alone. Members of Congress must also be willing to compromise, be pragmatic and work hard.

The POTUS should adhere to the Constitution and American values. First priority is protecting its Citizens wherever the may be in the world. Second priority is protecting its borders. You are not a country without borders. A strong active military is needed to provide this protection.

Honesty, integrity and a true American patriot willing to support the U.S. Constitution regardless of personal religious ideology.

I totally agree. "Render to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God that which is God's". Personal religious ideology is just that - personal, and should be paraded around as a political badge.

A president must have leadership abilities good enough to make Congress want to do what is good for the country not states or special interests.

I remember a long time ago when experience meant everything. If I need an operation I will look for a Doctor with the most experience. If your going after Bin Laden you send the best the ones with the mot experience. After this last 7 years you think we would want someone with experience in all fazes of life Military include but I can see from the votes experience does not mean much. When I fly to Denver I hope one of the pilots has some experience.

Many of the examples already listed strike a resounding "yes" from me as well, but, I strongly feel that a POTUS should also have served in some Branch of the Military, since its most difficult to hold the "Commander in Chief" position, and not have experienced the fact that you have agreed to give it your all, should that be the price paid for our Freedom. Unfortunately, with the existing candidates, such is not an option.

After watching most of the debates, I hear all of the same promises from the past, with the same results. NO PROGRESS. Neither party is qualified to rule as long as the other rejects good ideas, protects financial interests of congressional members, and simply forgot who put them there. Us voters should come first. not special interests. As candidates drop out, I am still looking for the one who can actually do what they promise. November is a long way off. Listen carefully. Vote responsibly, not as party sheep.

Honorable Military Service

Submitted by VFW Legionnaire (not verified) : Mar 3, 2016 6:07pm

The Commander In Chief should have Honorable Military Service. Still I will vote with the party even if they don't have military service but it is plus.

Willingness to OBEY AND UPHOLD their oath of office and the United States Constitution. This has become an all too rare thing in politics.

In this election, you vote for the lesser of the evils

No one should be considered to be Commander-in-Chief of all our Military forces that has not already gave service to our Country. That is like hiring a plumber to fix a high power electrical short. Hard working people should boycott these companies that relocated in China and other low income places so they could make a killing. We purchase over half the goods made in the world. Let these traitor companies that left us without jobs sell to the Chinese or elsewhere and see if they can make it!

Some of our finest Presidents did not serve and some of the worst DID.

The American people want numerous things in a President/politician. These things are as diverse as America. Some are popular some are not. Diversity is due to several factors such as the individuals environmental upbringing. So for the President to eg be religious I think is nonsense and I'm a religious person. Another want is a good leader. What I think is a good leader may differ from what you think is a good leader.

I know enough and am big enough to understand there are Americans who are not religious just as I know there are Americans who are gay, White, religious etc. I don't think any politician should run for office thinking what he or his party believes is the only way to solve a problem. That's one of Americas current problems. Each party feels they don't need the other party to make decisions for the American people. They feel their way is the best and they don't need any help in running the country.

The country should be run solely based on what the American people want not what the Democratic or the Republican Parties want or a particular politician wants or believes. So if a Republican is elected and his/her constituents want gay marriage then that's what he/she should protect or vote for. The politician should not vote against gay marriage because he or his party doesn't like gay marriage. The same goes if a politician believes in horoscopes. I don't want a politician making a decision based on what a crystal ball tells him/her. They should do what's right for the country not what's right for them or a corrupt political party.

People reading this don't have to agree with me or my reasoning. Just remember America will unknowingly elect eg a Widget President in the future. Don't you think it would be better to have someone in office who does what the American people want instead of what he or she wants.

Oh, you may substitute any adjective you would like for Widget.

I am sick & tired of career politicians who just line their pockets, I want to see a professional business man who knows how to run a company
because after all our country is a business & needs direction to get us out from under a debt that's become unbelievable.

All of the above except number #3.

We need a third party ! Stalemate between congress and the president has resulted in "NOTHING" for 8 + years. There must be a system to avoid that in the future. What I have learned in my 93 years is that politicians are liars interested in their own well being, NOT the well being of the country ! Also, ELIMINATE PAC's !!!

We do not need another political hack that does not listen to the people of this nation. Our once strong nation is now so weak that our military is not allowed to do it's job and we are seen as failures and weak on the world stage.

Agreed. In 8 years the current administration did what Russia could not accomplish in 50+ years. We are hamstrung by a group of gutless wonders.

Integrity trumps everything else, the current Commander in Chief does not posess this quality and this nation, our armed forces and veterans suffers for it.

Submitted by JAB (not verified) : Mar 4, 2016 4:46pm

President Obama had more integrity than any of the GOP members of the Senate who ate traitors.

Submitted by HCB (not verified) : Mar 4, 2016 6:00pm

Integrity and obama do not belong in the same sentence.

JAB - You are exactly right. That has been the problem with Obama during his whole Presidency.

Donald Trump is saying what the pubic wants to hear. I'm not certain that he's Presidential material. What bothers me is that not one Politition in this race has had the common sense to look at Trumps numbers and say "oh, so that's what the people are interested in". They just keep stumbling along.

I would like a President who will take decisive action if necessary even if the mainstream media opposed it.

Submitted by Joe Domhan (not verified) : Mar 4, 2016 10:22pm

The problem we have created for ourselves is a professional ruling class of politicians. I have been a observer & voter since the 1960's and am now convinced that this ruling group is going to lead to the downfall of our nation. I am now convinced that no person should be allowed to hold ANY public office for more than two terms in his or her lifetime. Meaning if a person holds a six year Senate term he or she can only serve six more years in the Senate, OR four years as President of the United States. This ruling elite has no concept of the way 99% of the population in this country has to live their lives, and THEY think that they deserve all the advantages they have voted themselves, like no Obama-care, and exorbitant salaries & pensions. Either way, twelve years in the Senate should be long enough for anyone to steal a fortune from the people they are supposed to represent.

Submitted by RLJ (not verified) : Mar 5, 2016 1:17pm

Some one who will represent the people and not their selves. They talk about entitlements for us when the politicians are the ones that need their entitlements cut. They need to serve not be served. People are sick of politicians that's the reason Donald Trump is where at today.

Submitted by JLK (not verified) : Mar 5, 2016 4:52pm

Whether Republican or Democrat, they enter the congress as freshman/woman and, within a few years, they're millionaires. Very few exceptions. Then they fight like ISIS to keep their positions. I say positions and not jobs cause they seldom work. Look @ Rubio from Florida. The people of Florida despise the guy cause he's never in the Senate. He's has the worst voting record in the Senate, yet he's running for President.
Talk about privilege. Trumps leading Rubio by 22 points in florida! Anyway JLK, you are absolutely right, "that's the reason Donald Trump" is where he is today.

Accepting "contributions" (some would call it bribes) to get RE-elected is almost a full-time job for our elected representatives. That's why there should be strict term limits of ONE TERM.
