American Legion race team talks veteran suicide prevention in June magazine

Don’t miss exclusive interviews with NTT INDYCAR drivers Tony Kanaan, Jimmie Johnson and Alex Palou in the June 2022 American Legion Magazine digital edition, along with articles on the misunderstood VA home loan, China’s threatening stance toward Taiwan and Theodore Roosevelt Jr.’s letters from Normandy. The clickable digi-mag is available through MyLegion.org.

• Myths and misinformation about the VA home loan program are hurting would-be veteran homebuyers, with as many as 80% who are trying to purchase homes using VA financing turned away by sellers and their real estate agents, Ken Olsen writes. “I hear it every day,” says P.J. Johnsen, a northern California Realtor and chair of the National Association of Realtors Federal Financing and Housing Committee. “Our veterans are being discriminated against.”

• In “This Century’s West Berlin,” Alan W. Dowd describes how Xi Jinping’s words and actions – not unlike Vladimir Putin’s in his buildup to war – suggest China is ready to move against Taiwan.

• NTT INDYCAR drivers Tony Kanaan, Jimmie Johnson and Alex Palou talk about the Legion’s “Be the One” initiative to reduce the veteran suicide rate, the 100 Miles for Hope fitness challenge and more.

• In his final letters from Normandy, American Legion founder Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. describes “the great venture of war.”

• National Commander Paul E. Dillard encourages Americans, especially Legionnaires, to show their support for Old Glory. “In a divided era, our star-spangled banner still waves, inviting us to remember the high ideals that unite us,” he says. Members of the American Legion Family can share their flag stories and photos at legiontown.org, under the category “Rally Around the Flag.”
