Gordon B. Browning
National Vice Commander

Gordon B. Browning was elected National Vice Commander of The American Legion on August 27, 2009 during the closing session of the 91st National Convention in Louisville.
Browning is a member of American Legion Post 36 in Chestertown. He has been a Legionnaire since 1978 and has held numerous leadership positions at the Legion’s post, state, and national levels.
A retired teacher and professor, Browning and his wife, Eva, have two children.

Eugene A. Schumacher

Eugene A. Schumacher was elected National Vice Commander of The American Legion on August 27, 2009 during the closing session of the 91st National Convention in Louisville.
An Air Force veteran of the Vietnam war era, Schumacher is a member of American Legion Post 24 in Aberdeen. He has been a Legionnaire since 1966 and has held numerous leadership positions at the Legion’s post, state, and national levels.
Schumacher is an area manager for Northwestern Public Service Company. He and his wife Sharon reside in Aberdeen.

Mark A. Avis
National Vice Commander

Mark A. Avis was elected National Vice Commander of The American Legion on August 27, 2009 during the closing session of the 91st National Convention in Louisville.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War era, Avis retired from the Army National Guard. He is a veterans service officer for the town of Palmer, Mass.
A member of Post 130 in Palmer, Avis has held many leadership positions at the post, department (state) and national levels. He is a past department commander for Massachusetts and a past commander, adjutant and finance officer for Post 130. He has served on the National Executive Committee of The American Legion and was an aide to then-National Commander Paul Morin in 2005 and 2006. He has also served on several national committees.
Avis and his wife, Joyce, have three children.

Morris M. Bentley

Morris M. Bentley was elected National Vice Commander of The American Legion on August 27, 2009 during the closing session of the 91st National Convention in Louisville.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Bentley is a member of American Legion Post 37 in Grangeville. He has been a Legionnaire since 1968 and has held numerous leadership positions at the Legion’s post, state, and national levels.
A licensed clinical social worker, he was instrumental in acquiring federal and local funding for the Veterans Nursing Home is Lewiston. He and his wife, Katrina, have six children.

James C. Morris

James C. Morris was elected National Vice Commander of The American Legion on August 27, 2009 during the closing session of the 91st National Convention in Louisville.
A U.S. Army veteran who served in Germany with the 97th Signal Group during the Vietnam War, Morris is a member of American Legion Post 97 in Cardington. He has been a Legionnaire since 1970 and has held numerous leadership positions at the Legion’s post, state, and national levels. Most recently he served as vice chairman of The American Legion’s national public relations commission.
Morris is retired from HPM Manufacturing. In addition to coaching Little League Baseball for 18 years, he served on the Cardington Fire Department for 17 years and on the Cardington-Lincoln Board of Education. He is a member of the County Veterans Commission. He and his wife, Lisbeth, have three children.
