Your Post can print off, complete and submit two copies to your Department Headquarters no later than June 15, 2008. Or, if you have the ALPOP program, you can submit directly to your department using that program.

Following is the letter from National Commander Marty Conatser and his CPR Challenge sent out to all Department Headquarters the week of March, 2008:

Last year we had a Commander’s Challenge to increase Consolidated Post Report (CPR) reporting up to a minimum of 75% from the 14,400 posts. We achieved 57% reporting. I want to continue this challenge so that we can continue towards the goal of 75% of your posts reporting on their Consolidated Post Reports. When I testified to Congress last September, I only reported the figures I had on hand from 8,188 Posts. Imagine what The American Legion story would be like if we would report activities from all our posts.

In this day and age when we have to fight for all we can from Congress, whether it is funding for the VA system or direct benefits for our local communities, it is imperative that we speak as one voice. The best, and at times most influential, way we can do that is when our posts let us know what they are doing in their respective communities. If we had 75% participation from all our 14,400 Posts, the amount of influence we would have at the state and national level would be hard to measure.

In order to encourage increased reporting, I have instituted the following challenges to all district and department leadership. For the departments and districts achieving the following:
  • Receive plaque at National Convention for department commanders achieving 95% and higher
  • Certificates provided to department commanders achieving 75% or higher
  • Certificates given to 98% - 100% district commanders
  • Publish department commander’s picture in Dispatch for those in the 100% Club and 95% - 99% Club
In February the blank CPR forms were mailed to your department headquarters for distribution to all the posts. Enough were provided for each post plus 10% extra. If for some reason you may need more, or have questions, please contact Michele Steinmetz at (317) 630-1321 and she will assist you. I encourage you to submit a completed CPR form and send to your department headquarters by June 15, 2008. All forms must be at National no later than July 1, 2008.

It is hoped that these ideas and incentives will increase post response rates to a point that all the great work we are doing in our departments will be reflected appropriately and we will not have to imagine anymore what it would be like if we received what we wanted from our local and national elected leaders.

Sincerely,
Marty Conatser
National Commander
