Alabama post donates $12,133 to help veterans needing a service dog

American Legion Post 133 in Millbrook, Ala., presented its second generous contribution to Service Dogs Alabama – $12,133. Local veteran Darrell Wilson and his service dog Bunny were at the presentation April 20. He is the “recipient of all the hard work and efforts of Post 133 (Legion Family) members,” said Post Commander Bobby Boswell.

Service Dogs Alabama provides medical and psychiatric service dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities. The organization also provides intervention facility dogs for schools, youth facilities and courtrooms.

The first donation Post 133 donated in support of Service Dogs Alabama was over $10,000. The significant contributions have been made possible from raffles, a 50/50, food drives, T-shirt sales and a motorcycle ride by the Legion Riders chapter.

“All year long we are raising money with different events,” Boswell said. “It’s to help our veterans who are in need of service dogs. We know how expensive they are, and it’s one cause that we really believe in that is very important to help our veterans.”

Boswell said the reason Post 133 has been able to raise over $25,000 for Service Dogs Alabama is because the members work as a family. “I have saying, ‘One team, one family, for many missions, God and country.’ That’s the Legion, Auxiliary, SAL and our Riders. When it comes to this, we’re one family on a mission.”
