Many young veterans may think of The American Legion as their grandfathers’ organization. With its deeply rooted traditions and longtime brick-and-mortar presence in our communities, it’s hard to convince this new generation of veterans that they, too, belong in the Legion.
Our mission remains as relevant to U.S. veterans today as it was at the Legion’s founding in 1919. Promoting patriotism and honor, advocating for veterans’ rights, fighting for a strong national defense and mentoring our nation’s youth are still our core pillars of service to our communities. The grass-roots nature of The American Legion is why it continues to thrive, building a network of proud Americans who gave their service to God and country.
Today, young veterans are taking advantage of new and prevailing technologies, self-organizing to support each other during their transition to civilian life. We see our members rallying together, engaging these young veterans in their virtual space, offering advice and helping whenever they can. Our organization is quickly expanding into and gaining momentum on various social networks, promoting The American Legion’s long-standing mission to serve veterans, servicemembers and their families. Legionnaires see communities being redefined by things like Twitter and Facebook. And as an organization, we are eager to participate in them – serving our members in the 21st century. To see is to believe, so please take a moment to find us online and learn what The American Legion is all about. We believe that you’ll like what you see and will want to join our ranks.
