‘Hero Moment’ video features The American Legion

Several members of The American Legion’s 100th Anniversary Honorary Committee will be featured the week of May 24 in a "Hero Moment" video on the American Heroes Channel (AHC).

The video will be shown in 30- and 60-second versions during AHC’s new “Salute to Sacrifice” programming that launches on May 24 from 9 a.m. to noon EDT. The Sunday morning block will include three episodes from the AHC series, “Against All Odds,” that tell stories from three World War II battles: Tarawa, Sugar Loaf Hill and the Battle of the Bulge.

The “Hero Moment” video, along with a PSA provided by The American Legion, will run on AHC through May 30. Legion committee members highlighted are Robert Spanogle, past national adjutant and past national commander of the Legion; Theodore Roosevelt IV, committee chairman and grandson of American Legion founder Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.; Diane Carlson Evans, founder and president of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation; and Val Nicholas, vice president of news at NBC Universal.

Spanogle says in “Hero Moment” that The American Legion is “a community self-help organization for brother and sister veterans.” He points out the important work of helping veterans with their rehabilitation. “They deserve not only our thanks, but whatever we can give them to make them whole, to welcome them back into society.”

Roosevelt adds that the Legion “is exceedingly important, and when you start enlisting the members of The American Legion to get something done, they have an impact.”

Evans recalls when she asked the Legion for help in building a memorial for women who served during the Vietnam War. “All along the way, there were people who helped me.”

Nicholas says that Legionnaires are “still serving America. And I tell people, when we first got into the service, we raised our hand and, as far as I know, we never put our hand back down.”

The programming schedule for the initial airing of the Legion’s “Hero Moment” on May 24 is:

9 a.m.: Against the Odds “The Heroes of Tarawa”

10a.m.: Against the Odds “The Battle for Sugar Loaf Hill” (Okinawa)

11a.m.: Against the Odds “Those Damned Engineers” (Battle of the Bulge)
