Douglas C. Powell

Posted in In Memoriam

My dad joined the Navy in 1937 and was in Pearl Harbor on USS Selfridge when it was attacked. He survived that and went on to serve 20 years, including a year at sea during the Korean War. All told, he was at sea for 18 of his 20 years. A photo of him in the engine room was taken by Life magazine's Carl Mydans, so he had a few moments of fame! Regretfully, he died at 63. With him being out to sea for most of my formative years and me enlisting in the Air Force at 18, I didn't have the opportunities to ask him all the questions I can now think of. He is sorely missed ...
