The funeral service was celebrated at St. Paul's Congregational Church in Nutley, where Rich was eulogized by his two daughters. During the service Rich’s favorite hymn, “Eternal Father,” was played and the poem “The Watch” by William Whiting was read. A U.S. Navy honor guard was also in attendance and presented his daughter Donna with the flag after they performed the flag-folding ceremony.

A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a radarman second class from 1960 to 1963 and served on USS Robison. He was very proud to have served his country. He was a member of American Legion Post 70 in Nutley for 20 years, served as commander three times for a total of five years, and was post chaplain for more than half his tenure. He also was chairman of the board of directors, was instrumental in rebuilding the post after a 2006 fire, was recognized for a variety of honors and was a member of the Nutley Veterans' Council, serving various times as president, secretary and treasurer. Rich won the Nutley Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 2002 and was grand marshal of the Nutley Memorial Day Parade in 2011. He volunteered on the Nutley Emergency Rescue Squad for almost 48 years beginning in 1965, and was an active riding member for 10 years before becoming an associate member, as well as serving as president on several occasions. The beloved husband of the late Barbara (Ebert) McClintick, he is survived by his children: Donna Ackerman and her husband, Ken; Tyna Otero and her husband, Ozzie, William and David Baldwin, and his grandchildren, Kayla Ackerman, Hayden and Olivia Otero. He was also predeceased by his grandson, Douglas Richard Ackerman; a sister, Virgina Mowen; and a brother, Raymond. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Nutley Volunteer Emergency & Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 172, Nutley, N.J, 07110 or St. Paul's Congregational Church would be preferred.
