Marvin M. Mertz

Marvin Mark Mertz, 86, of Mahoning Township, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, in the Palmerton Hospital. He was the husband of the late Lillian E. (Amaral) Mertz, who passed away Sept. 10, 2000. Prior to retiring, he was employed by the Pennsylvania State Highway Department as a driver/equipment operator in the road maintenance division.
Born in Mahoning Valley, he was a son of the late Amnon and Mayme (Gombert) Mertz. He served our country with the U.S. Army Security Agency during the Korean War, having attained the rank of corporal. Mertz was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lehighton. He also belonged to the Beaver Run Rod and Gun Club; American Legion Post 314, its Korean Last Man's Club and Lehigh Fire Co. No. 1, all of Lehighton; the Diamond Fire Co., Walnutport; and the Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Co.; and was a charter member of the Mahoning Valley Fire Co. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt large and small game in the local area.
Surviving are two daughters, Melody of Albrightsville and Sheila of Hopewell, Va.; a son, Wayne, of Lehighton; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by four sisters, Edith Fritz, Marie Stahler, Beatrice Small and Lottie Ebbert; and a brother, Woodrow. Service: Funeral service Nov. 20, St. John Lutheran Church, Lehighton, with the Rev. Paul Schoffstall officiating.
