Col. John H. "Jack" Chitty Jr.

John H. "Jack" Chitty Jr., 89, most recently of Stafford, Va., passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at the home of one of his sons. Chitty was a devoted husband and father. He was a member of Neptune Baptist Church in Neptune Beach, Fla. for 36 years, where he was very active and sang in the choir. Chitty graduated with the West Point class of 1948. He served two tours in Korea and was a two-time Bronze Star recipient. At different points in his military career he served as:
Professor of English, West Point Military Academy
General staff intelligence officer, Stuttgart, Germany
Senior intelligence officer along the DMZ between North and South Korea
Professor of military science at Stetson University's ROTC Department
Commanding officer, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry, 3rd Armored Division
Editor-in-chief of the Military Review
He retired with distinction as a colonel in 1976. According to all who knew him, he embodied everything that was good and right from “The Great Generation.” Survivors include his three sons: Mark and his wife, Cathy, Matt and his wife, Donna, and David and his wife, Teresa; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His remains await final burial with honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
