Andrew "Andy" Papa

Andrew “Andy” Papa, 87, of Whiting, passed away at Community Medical Center, Toms River, on May 29, 2015. Born in Pittston, Pa., he was formerly of Paterson, Wayne, West Milford and Clifton before moving to Whiting 22 years ago. He worked for the Postal Service for 26 years, retiring as postmaster of the Bernardsville Post Office in 1983, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on USS Tidewater AD-31 where he served as plank owner. Andrew was president of the trustees of the Residents Club, a member of the Italian American Club and life member of the Knights of Columbus, all of Whiting; life member of American Legion Post 174; started bingo in Village 6 in Whiting; Passaic County Commander of The American Legion; member of NARFE, Lakehurst #1619 and initiated the building for the Legion as well getting the street name changed and obtaining a liquor license for the club. He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Louise (Angony) Papa, his brother Vincent Papa and sister-in-law Florence and sister Antoinette Rendini. Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Philomena (nee Iannelli); his children and spouses, Andrea and James Faraci, Cranbury; Michele and Alan Schwiederek, Mason, Ohio; Andrew Jr. and Carrie Papa, LaGrange, Ky.; his brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Cathy Rendini, Whiting; and his grandchildren: Laura and Alex Pettit, Johanna, James, Andrew, Lisa and Kayley.
