On April 11, 2013, Chief Andrews departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father. He was preceded in death by his daughter Madeline Andrews, son John Vincent Andrews, granddaughter Michelle Andrews, parents Alcess & Madeline Navarre Andrews, brothers Lester, O'Neil & Walter Andrews, and sisters Rita Reno, Elvira Callagan, Clara Davis, Edna Hoolahan, Dorothy Emma Cordes, & Annie Ruth Andrews.
He leaves behind his beloved cherished memories and to celebrate his life, beloved wife Geraldine F. Andrews; son Edward James Andrews Jr. and wife Betty Andrews; daughter Bonnie Andrews Valentine and husband Duane Shipp; granddaughter Brandy Goldie and husband Phillip; grandsons Shane Valentine and wife Aimee, Jonathan Valentine, Will Saunders, Brian Shipp and wife Misty, Keith Shipp; 12 great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Andrews was born in Westwego, La., and was a native of New Orleans. He was in the construction business in Houma, La., before moving to Gulfport in 1966 to serve with the US Naval Seabees. Andrews was a WWII, Korean War and Vietnam veteran. He retired from the US Naval Seabees with 41 years of active and reserve service. The Secretary of the Navy presented Andrews the Navy Commendation Medal "For heroism in rendering first aid and emergency treatment to approximately 17 U. S. Marines whose truck had plunged about 300 to 400 feet down the side of Hill 724 just below Hai Van Pass in the Danang area of South Vietnam on 30 July 1967." He was a member of The American Legion, Fleet Reserve, and a charter member of VFW Post 4526.
