Gary W. Sammons

Sept. 20, 1946 - Jan. 30, 2019
Born in Michigan, he lived almost his entire life in Ecorse, Mich., and throughout has been in service to others. Beginning in his adulthood, he joined the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Once his service and college education at Eastern Michigan University was complete, he began a career of teaching at both the junior high and high school in Ecorse. At the same time he became an avid active member at his local American Legion post, and spent an abundance of his free time within the organization devoted to veteran benefits and rights. He has also held local government positions and reveled serving his community within the city council. For leisure he enjoyed following politics, golfing and travel. Many of his students would describe him as firm but fair, and would all agree that his vast knowledge and no-nonsense attitude toward work ethic undeniably resulted in learning. He has often been looked to as a leader, by his general aptitude, business savvy, and astounding ability to speak publicly with his steadfast demeanor. Gary is survived by daughter Nicole, grandson Jaylen, and his immediate family locally; cousin Lisa, niece Hillary, and nephews Jeffrey, Matthew and Gary. He was preceded in death by his mother Lida, father Ernest and sister Janet.
He was revered by many, and will continue to be greatly missed.
