Thomas Luyster

Thomas, Jr., 91, of NJ Veterans Memorial Home of Paramus, formerly of Saddle Brook, N.J., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022.
Thomas was born in Paterson, N.J., on June 12, 1930, to father Thomas Luyster and mother Mary E. Tilsher. He loved hunting and fishing as a child.
Loving husband predeceased by Helen E. Luyster (married for 60 years), loving father of Thomas Luyster III and Edward D. Luyster and his wife Monica. He was a treasured grandfather of Rachel Stella, Natalie Kazak, Brian Luyster, Stephen Luyster, Jaimee Luyster and Rita Luyster. He was a great-grandfather to Santino Michael Luyster and Warren Edward Stella. He predeceased his sisters Betty Appleton, Marie Muskivich and Lillian Pierce, and grandchild Thomas Luyster IV.
Thomas enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 18, served from 1948 to 1953, obtained the rank of sergeant during the Korean War and was a rifle marksman. He served in Company A, 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. He also served in the Marine Corps Reserve for another two years until 1955.
After the military he went on to become a chemical engineer, and later became a technical director for a NJ chemical company and worked there over 41 years. In his spare time, he loved to play golf, build golf club sets for family and friends, refurbish and build furniture. Thomas and Helen built a house on Cape Cod, Mass., and spent many years traveling back and forth from NJ to the Cape. His family has many memorable memories of their vacations on Cape Cod.
In his retirement, Thomas was continually active in Marine Corps programs and associations. He was a proud Marine Corps Korean War veteran. Thomas and Helen volunteered much of their time to the Toys for Tots program and collected thousands of toys over 10 years. They also participated in many Marine Corps fundraisers and loved attending the Marine Corps Ball. He was a life member of the following organizations: Marine Corps Assn., Marine Engineers Assn, 2nd Marine Division Assn, Marine Corps League, Korean War Veterans Assn, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. Thomas was a recipient of the Marine Corps Chapel of the Four Chaplains Award. Semper Fi.
