Redesigned Legion website draws record audience

The American Legion’s national website, www.legion.org, had record traffic in November after it was redeveloped for a better mobile-device user experience.

In November, more than 457,000 unique visits were recorded, a 50 percent increase from the previous month and 100,000 more visits than the average monthly total this year. The site was redeveloped in the first step among many leading up to a new architecture for www.legion.org expected to be complete in early 2016.

“We have found that since the mobile-friendly redesign was launched on Veterans Day, the site has attracted and retained substantially more visitors,” said Walter Ivie, chairman of The American Legion Media & Communications Commission, which oversees the website. “Our website provides news and information for a significant and growing audience — members, donors, those involved with our many children and youth programs, and many others. Thanks to the responsive design, our visitors are more engaged with the website whether they are on their cellphone, tablet, desktop or laptop.”

The responsive design means that pages load easier regardless of the type of device being used.

Another area of growth is the Legiontown USA website. In the past few years, hundreds of readers have shared their stories on their service, a family’s military history, post and community memorials, Legion Riders events and more.

To share your story, visit www.legiontown.org. Once an editor approves the story, it will appear on both Legiontown and legion.org.

“Legiontown is an excellent way for veterans and their family members to preserve their memories of service,” Ivie said. “I encourage everyone who served, or their family members, to visit Legiontown and share their stories. If we don’t remind current and future generations of service, patriotism and sacrifice, then who will?”
