What should the United States do about the Guantanamo Bay detention facility?

It should be closed down, and detainees brought to the United States where their cases can be heard in court.

Gitmo served its purpose, but now it’s time to close it down and send the detainees back to authorities in their home countries.

The detainees should have tried by Military tribunal years ago. That should be done as quickly as possible and the place closed. These people have comitted war crimes and have no right to an American court trial.

Military courts all the way, conviction of treason should always be execution. We are at war with these mindless religeous fanatics. Never close Guantanamo, how stupid "Close Guantanamo" What is the war on terrisim over? it will never be over, I say expand the base for more murderers and build a gallows in plain sight of these freaks of nature. Amen.

I AGREE WITH CHARLES. GITMO SHOULD STAY OPEN. SHOULD HAVE A MILITARY TRIAL, IF GULITY THEY SHOULD BE SHOT. THEN WHEN THE PLACE IS GETTING EMPTY SEND THE CRIMINALS FROM THE U.S. THERE AND CLOSE DOWN THE PRISON HERE. ONLY KEEP A FEW OPEN UNTIL CURRENT AND FUTURE CRIMINALS CAN BE TRANSPORTED TO GITMO. ONES LIKE CHARLES MANSON, TED THE UNI BOMBER, JUST TO NAME A COUPLE. WHY WE ARE PAYING TO KEEP THESE AND OTHERS LIKE THEM ALIVE IS CRAZY AND A WASTE OF MONEY.

When I was a kid, I couldn't understand why Eisenhower was so popular. Maybe this will explain why.

General Eisenhower Warned Us
[
It is a matter of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect:

'Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses -because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened'

This week, the UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. It is not removed as yet.. However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended. This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the,6 million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Chris tians, and 1,900 Catholic priests Who were 'murdered, raped, burned, starved, beat, experimented on and humiliated' while the German people looked the other way!

Now, more than ever, with Iran , among others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,' it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

[
This e-mail is intended to reach 400 million people! Be a link in the memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

How many years will it be before the attack on the World Trade Center

'NEVER HAPPENED',

because it offends some Muslim extremists in the U.S. ???

Do not just delete this message; it will take only a minute to pass this along.

Shoot each and every one of them.. They would do it to us in a minute. Every time we repatriate one , the start killing us all over. What the hell is wrong with the sissy Congress and others. These people are sworn to destroy all infidels. That is us. Muslim Brotherhood et all.

Alright, after reading all the comments, I think I'd like to address some of the vitriol displayed within. First and foremost, these were enemy combatants and as such are incarcerated until such time as the war is over. Now, whether “the war” is defined as “The Global War on Terrorism” (which is definitely still ongoing) or the hostile actions in Iraq and Afghanistan (one completed and the other winding down) remains up to the Congress to decide. However, if the Congress decides “the war” applies to the hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan then those currently held in Gitmo should be repatriated to the authorities in their home nations for whatever disposition those countries chose to administer. That includes the return and immediate incarceration and trial for treason of all Americans held as enemy combatants.

Moving along, for those that wondered why we don’t just kill them, or demanded these prisoners be executed because that is what they would do if the shoe was on the other foot, the answer should be obvious; we don’t do this because we are not Islamo-Fascist terrorists but a nation that has different standards than the barbarians that attacked us. BTW This is also why we don’t dump them into the sea and let them swim home. Come on people I know these people are worse than rabid dogs with a toothache but that doesn't mean we must emulate them.

Additionally, while I am in favor of keeping Gitmo open because there is a need for a secure offshore holding area for a specific category of enemy prisoner that doesn’t qualify as a criminal or as a national prisoner of war (enemy combatant) there is no way I would support the using of Gitmo for the housing of any level of US criminal prisoner. Gitmo is a military detention center and as such not designed for housing civilian prisoners. As veterans we all know, or should know, there is a world of difference between the rules and regulations vis-à-vis the USMJ and the US (civilian) Legal Code’s rules and regulations. There is also a world of difference between the minimum legal requirements for the housing of civilian prisoners and those of POWs or enemy combatants.

Finally, for those that feel the proper solution is to just kill those housed in Gitmo, I’ve got a question. If those actively engaged against those residing in Gitmo took them prisoner rather than killing them, despite that engagement, who are we to second guess these soldiers and Marines? If you actually want to kill the enemy, reenlist and request combat assignment. If you are too old to reenlist, suck it up like the rest of us old fart vets do, and be glad things aren’t so bad they are accepting our tired old butts. We don’t have to act like curmudgeons just because we’re too old to serve and we don’t have demand blood where our brothers didn’t find the need to spill it.

Other veterans’ mileage obviously differs.
