Lewiston Veterans Memorial Park, one of the best in Maine

The Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston, Maine, is supersived by the Lewiston & Auburn Veterans Council. The city of Lewiston told the council it could use what was formerly Heritage Park as a veterans park, and work on getting different monuments - hardware representing veterans - for it.
This was done in 2002, and the council - under the chairmanship of Bert Dutil, a veteran of the Korean War - with help from six veterans posts:

American Legion Post 22
D.A.V. Chapter 11
Franco Vets Post 31
Marine Corps League Central Detachment
VFW Post 1603
VFW Post 9150

started with the donation of six flag poles representing five military branches and POW/MIA. The park already had American and state flag poles. The work began with what we call name stones; each stone has 216 names. Veterans or those presently in the military can have their names on these stones, but we do need DD-214s or discharge paper, or proof of military status. We presently have 27 of these name stones. We also have polished granite benches with names on them, 12 at present, as well as several monuments, with the largest facing Main Street in Lewiston costing $42,000, and a military Jeep, a gun and anchor from the Navy on display.
At this writing we have members from American Legion posts 135 and 153, Amvets Post 6 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. What a great group working for veterans.

Thanks,
Bert Dutil
