Memorial Day brought to life

Orcutt Post 534 held their 2014 Memorial Day program at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Orcutt, Calif. Alan Much, Post 534 Americanism Committee chairman, served as master of ceremonies. Capt. Phil Desmarais of the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed at Vandenberg AFB, read the poem "In Flanders Fields," written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, a Canadian physician and veteran of World War I. An American reply, written by Moina Michael in a poem called "We Shall Keep the Faith," was read by Rick Pushies, Public Relations chairman of Post 534. Col. Keith Balts, Commander 30th Space Wing, Vandenberg AFB, was our guest speaker.

In response to our Memorial Day program, a member of the audience named Clarita Mojica wrote, "Memorial Day celebrations hadn’t been a big deal for me until I joined the one at the historic Pine Grove Cemetery, where patriotism was truly displayed. Though a small celebration, the impact on me was huge and remarkable, and being in the historic cemetery even made it more meaningful. I am an immigrant and had never felt so patriotic."

A nice response to a heartfelt program honoring those members of our military who made the ultimate sacrifice to our country - our war dead.
