University of Wisconsin-Platteville Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville dedicated its Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2022. The memorial honors UW-Platteville students and alumni who were killed in action in the Vietnam War.
The memorial was the vision of Lt. Col. Mac Kolar, USMC retired, Vietnam veteran and 1969 graduate of UW-Platteville, and Dr. James Lawton, a 1967 UW-Platteville graduate. Both had known UW-Platteville Vietnam fallen and wanted their memories to live on.
A collaborative endeavor that spanned three years and included the help of faculty, staff and students identified 12 students and alumni killed in action. Research of military records, contact with next of kin and newspaper articles enabled Kolar to produce biographies that were published in a booklet distributed to the nearly 300 who attended the event. The granite stone memorial with a bronze plaque was placed at the base of flagpoles near the entrance to the UW-Platteville campus.
The names of the fallen UW-Platteville students and alumni appear on the bronze plaque on a granite stone memorial located at the base of the flagpoles near the campus entrance. The memorial compliments other veterans memorials, to include WWI and WWII, on the UW-Platteville campus.
