Keiser University partners with American Legion Post 183

Keiser University and American Legion Post 183 in Fern Park, Florida, worked together to bring a much needed asset to the Orlando campus. Dr. Michael Cox, the faculty adviser for the Student Veterans of America chapter, worked for six months to bring a Veterans Service Officer to the campus. Having identified a need to have on-campus support for the veterans attending school at the Orlando campus, Cox made contact with several Veterans Service Organizations throughout the area before he came to the American Legion Post 183 in Fern Park.
The request for a service officer was received by post Commander Eric Hench who forwarded the request to Gerald A. Kaufman, service officer. Kaufman made contact with Cox and a meeting was held at the campus. An agreement was made to have Kaufman at the campus on Monday and Tuesday of every week from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The university built a dedicated office to be used by the service officer and the counselor for the Department of Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation program.
Kaufman is accredited by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Kaufman is a volunteer who believes in "Veterans Helping Veterans."
Kaufman said, “This is what we do in the Legion. We take care of our veterans and their families." It is not just filing claims for VA benefits but assisting veterans in the use of their VA home loan benefits, counseling, family emergencies, emergency financial aid and scholarships for school. I am here for the veterans and their families."
The services are free and you do not have to be a member of The American Legion.
