First black woman, post commander for Legion in Oklahoma

I love my post, Carson-Wilson-Rigney-Forrester-Shoemaker Post 1 in Tulsa, Okla. First, when I was struggling with the military to stay in, I had no income, was trying to sell my home, and lost my home and was about to be homeless. I was told to go down to the Legion and get help, and help I did get for me, a single mom, to find a place to live and getting moved (I didn't know any of these guys that were moving across town that Saturday morning) to paying my first month's rent and helping me get my VA benefits.
I came down a couple of weeks later to thank them all once again, and ended up becoming a Service Officer from 2004-2010 (haven't ready quit), to Membership Chairperson, to 1st and 2nd Vice, Finance Officer, to Commander, going to National Legion College in 2010. I have had the love and support from my brothers and sisters there. Then I needed an evening gown to compete in the Ms. Veteran America 2014 competition and donations to help get me to the finals, they were there for me and when I lost my mother this year, they were there for me. I always wear my Legion, whereever I go; even to the grocery store or doctor's appointment, except to church, unless the post is having something going on that I can come and help with. I am proud to be a member of the Legion. And I am proud to be a member of Tulsa Post 1. I am a dual member and I am always trying my best to get someone to sign on the line to become a member, too. Even though I now live two hours away and pass by several other posts on my way into Tulsa, Post 1 is where I want to be. It is where my family is.
