California shuts out, eliminates Connecticut

SHELBY, N.C. – Andrew Mendoza and Anthony Timmons combined to toss a three-hit shutout and lead Lakewood, Calif., to a 4-0 victory over Milford, Conn., in an elimination game at the 2012 American Legion World Series on Saturday.

Lakewood (24-7) advances to the third round where it will face either Bellevue, Wash., or Brooklawn, N.J., in an elimination bout. Milford (30-8) concludes its season.

Mendoza was the star for the Western Region champs, giving up just two hits in six innings of work. He also played a role in nabbing two Milford base thieves.

Timmons, who picked up a save in relief, led the squad with two hits and swiped a pair of bases.
