Question:

Is there is any type of assistance to help with debt relief or filing for bankruptcy? We signed up with a company that was supposed to be a “debt consolidation” company; instead of paying the money to our creditors they pocketed our money. – Chad

Answer:

We were just talking the other day about how much we hate those debt settlement and consolidation commercials on the radio! We agree that it’s time for you to get some help…the right kind of help. With that in mind, we recommend finding a counselor affiliated with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. You will be able to find a local counselor by visiting their website, www.nfcc.org. They should be able to steer you in the right direction which we’re sure will include looking for opportunities to create additional income, building a budget that works, and maybe even what they call a Debt Management Plan. Depending on how much you owe, they may be able to secure lower interest rates (or get the interest waived!) and they will come up with a payment plan for you. Unlike many of the unscrupulous companies that constantly advertise, 100 percent of your payment money will go to creditors if you work through an NFCC counselor! It’s going to be a tough road to hoe but these folks will get you headed in the right direction.
