Question:

Just finished reading Twelve for 12 by J.J. Montanaro and in the month of February he said that “a mere $100 a month growing at 8 percent will result in about $60,000 in 20 years.” Where do I find something/someone that is giving 8 percent? – Marion

Answer:

Wow, based on the number of emails I received on this one, I wish I had been more specific! My point was simply that a little bit saved each month can add up over time. The “8 percent” I referred to was not tied to a specific investment, but rather a hypothetical return on a long term portfolio. To the best of my knowledge there are no savings accounts or CDs out there that are paying anywhere near 8 percent. On the other hand, I still think eight percent is a fair expectation for a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds over the next twenty years.
