When you leave the military, the biggest question is "what's next?" It's a scary job market right now, but the skills you've received in the military make you highly marketable. The Department of Veterans Affairs Blog recently took a hard look at Bureau of Labor statistics(http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t05.htm) and saw that the unemployment rate for veterans is in decline. From December 2009 to June 2013, there is a clear downward arc in unemployment, which means that efforts to hire veterans have been successful and long-lasting progress is being made.
For veterans 18 years and older, the unemployment rate has dropped from 7.4 percent in June 2012 to 6.3 percent last month. The jobless rate for Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans fell from 9.5 percent to 7.2 percent in the same time period. For Persian Gulf War veterans, the jobless rate fell from 6.4 percent to 4.9 percent.
The numbers are encouraging, as is the declining national unemployment rate (8.1 percent in June 2012 and 7.5 percent last month), but we know there is more to be done. In this economy, too many veterans still can’t find meaningful work, and organizations across the country are working every day to remedy that.
