The American Legion’s Position on Illegal Immigration
By American Legion National Commander Paul A. Morin
The United States Senate should block the compromise immigration bill---the issue is too important to create new laws while ignoring existing laws.
The American Legion, most Americans, and the majority of legal immigrants oppose any measures that sanction or condone coming to this country in any manner other than as stipulated by existing law, whether disguised as “undocumented workers” or “guest-worker programs” or any other wordsmithing that is synonymous with amnesty.
Americans understand the meaning of “immigration,” but the adjectives “legal” and “illegal” seem to be deliberately ignored by some.
The American Legion’s official position is simple: enforcement, enforcement, and enforcement.
Assimilation into American society by legal immigrants is important to the nation’s welfare; however, the failure to properly enforce existing immigration laws divides the nation and manifests both serious racial and cultural turmoil.
The message to Capitol Hill is clear:
- Oppose any great influx of legal immigrants and support immigration quotas set on a moderate and regulated scale in numbers that enable immigrants to be readily absorbed into the culture and lifestream of the United States.
- Call for a strong and ceremonially rich citizenship naturalization process.
- Remain steadfast in the belief that all legal immigrants seeking citizenship should possess a level of proficiency with the English language and an understanding of U.S. history and government.
- Advocate that a naturalization ceremony should be mandatory and conducted in the English language and in a U.S. district court.
- Support legislation that allows legal immigrants who are U.S. military veterans, with less than three years of active-duty service, to seek naturalization if they are injured or their injuries were aggravated while on active-duty with the U.S. Armed Forces, resulting in a discharge under honorable conditions.

NO amnesty - period. My Italian forefathers came here in the 1890's. My family learned the native language, learned to adapt, work hard, succeed and prosper LEGALLY! If you want the Mexicans, or Latinos here, then make Mexico the 51st state. Otherwise, follow the path of our ancestors.

Commander Morin's comments are spot on. --We are at a critical place in American history. Not since WW II have I worried about our beloved country being occupied by foreign nationals. I will likely find the most conserative, dedicated, and pro American location to be buried in hopes that a younger American will lovingly mow the grass and tend my grave. Will Roberts

Are our Politicians living in a dream world, none of the enforcement measures in S. 1348 are paid for. We know from the Secure Fence Act what happens when things aren't paid for - nothing. 9/11 Families for Secure America has noted that Congress has been passing all kinds of enforcement measures through the years that never got implemented because the White House refuses to ask for funding and because the Congress routinely short-changes them. Without appropriations, none of the talk about increased enforcement means much, especially when you consider the poor track records of the last three Administrations, who have excelled only at ignoring immigration laws. Please write your Senators, tell them, vote "NO" on S. 1348, for all our Brothers-at-arms who died for this country.

I support Comprehensive Reform to our broken system.
Let the United States of America be a guiding light and not lose sight of our great principles- that has fueled our country.
Many groups of people entered this nation at a time when a system was in place, hence, Ellis Island.
As an American I do not support slamming the door shut to people who hold the same vision for a better life that many of our ancestors envisioned.
I support immigration reform. When many of our ancestors came to America willing- the system could take in millions of individuals seeking a better life for themselves and their children. Many others were forced against their will- during the slave trade, and many others were forced off of their land- our native people.
Currently, we have a system that is fragmented and broken, this system has not met the needs or demands of our consumer driven society, nor the demands of our global economy.
I believe America is a more effective nation when we work on building a system that supports the global economy and most important supports the dignity of each man, woman, and child leaving behind all they have ever known to come to America.
There is enough land to accommodate all- my question is there enough love within our hearts to embrace those living in the shadows? Economic conditions should not force anyone to have to lie, hide, and not receive proper medical treatment when some falls ill.
Although, we have seen many wealthy Americans do these same acts to enhance their wealth, fill a psychological shortcoming. I honestly cannot compare someone who is a natural born-citizen and an undocumented immigrant lying, hiding fairly. A natural-born citizen motive is greed, lack of character, etc. The undocumented immigrants motive is survival.
Corporations have seized the opportunity to use undocumented labor to gain billions of dollars. It hurts the worker, it hurts the corporations exploiting human beings, it hurts the consumer- buying goods and services at a low price- while barking at those people who should just go home and get in line to do things legally. By the way, I am still looking for the line. I wanted to take many people there. I still have not found it.
Ok, American consumer are we ready to roll up our sleeves, put down our MP3 players, lattes, and everyday conveniences to work from dawn until dusk, in order to keep prices down? That is something to think about. All of our ancestors worked hard to build America.
I ask all people of faith to search your hearts and souls-then take a stand to ensure the least of these within our midst have a voice and we vote for legislators who will lead our nation in a direction that create fair and just laws for everyone here and those yet to come.
Our nation has endured much, and we will go though more. We must go through this together and not lose our souls to despising a poor man, woman, or child seeking to be what so many of us have become.

I am for people coming to this Country, but let them do it legally. Don't come to this country illegally, fly our flag upside down in disrepect, flying your flag above ours. This is flat out rebellion. The U.S. flag is more than a piece of material to those of us who have protected her, for those who have died for her. Yes, there is room for more in this Great Nation, but do it legally!!!!

I support the Legion's stand on illegal immigration. For some forty years our politicians have ignored our immigration laws which were enacted to protect our country's soverign status. If the " Comprehensive Reform" is passed and millions of third world illegals are
given legal status(with millions more to follow) you may well be assured that America will have a massive civil war. Don't sell your guns.

On June 16th, in Sacramento, California, there was a March For America/ No Amnesty Rally. It was held in front of the Univision Office on Arden Way. The Sacramento Bee refused to cover the event, and has completely blocked any attempt to bring up the event in the comments section. This deliberate blockade of real news, that does not coincide with their agenda, is as bad as Nazi propaganda tactics. We need more veterans at these types of rallies, or this country is lost.

Many see the "Comprehensive Immigragion Bill" as being neccessary. I, for one about 70 percent of United States of America, see national security of utmost importance.
It is more than apparent that if existing immagration laws are not enforced, then new ones will be seen as a joke to the rest of the world.
Keep someone at our 'door' and close the 'windows' now! Those not legally inside now can be delt with only after our borders are secure. Mexicans are not or immediate threat.
To think terrorists will 'document' themselves into our nation is simply a stupid dream of our elected officials.
It's not "one cometh by land, two cometh by sea" now. It's "thousands cometh by air and sea, millions cometh by land".
Stop illegal inflow first, document those willing to do so later. It only makes sense!

I say the existing immigration laws must be enforced before any other laws are passed.

I am glad the American Legion supports the existing laws. I find it unfair to my own heritage to hear the explination of amnesty that people will have to leave family members behind. My forefathers had to leave family members at home till they not only gained legal citizenship in the U.S. but also made enough money for passage here for their families. To me it's a disgrace to the idea of how this country started to suddenly forget people were once proud to become citizens.
I am proud of anyone willing to take the steps to be apart of this country.

My Grand father came from Finland in the early 1900's our family has served our county from WW1 - WW2 -Korea-Vietnam-Gulf war- to present and will for more years than i can count and we did it legally, How can some one not see 11 million people crossing the boarder, Our politicians need to wake up before it's to late I stand with the Legion on there policy ( NO AMNESTY FOR ILLEGALS )

Our government can't even enforce our existing laws to prevent businesses from hiring illegal immigrants.
Here's a news flash, Washington:
1. Illegal immigrants can't vote.
2. Most Americans don't want businesses to hire undocumented workers.
